Cold and Hunger

I don't find that same phenomenon while swimming, but do if I bike in the cold.  Never really thought about the body's signaling hunger to up the thermic effect.

Do you notice this?

  • Interesting read Mike.  But, I have to say, I must be cold 24 hours a day.  I can't put the fork down!!

  • That explains why I am always starving after swimming. Maybe I won't pack the softshell away with the winter clothes -- and put it in the swim bag.

  • I'm always STARVING when I get out of the water and just assumed it had something to do with exersizing without getting hot (when I'm hot I don't have an appetite). Can't say I've noticed any difference between hot or cold rides though. Hmmmmmmmmmm.
  • I have read this elsewhere, but more on the vein of staying warm to avoid being hungry all the time. I think that learning the rhythm of your body's needs for calories, and then meeting that consistently, is a way to building a relationship around food that really has a positive outcome (the one you want on your body comp) outside of the general conditions. Of course, if the temp drops to like 32 degrees, all bets are off...anyone else?
  • Hmmm. Interesting. I guess I need to think about this more. I'm cold more than I'm not cold. But I'm hot at really odd times..Like first thing in the AM before getting out of bed...I start to sweat and my skin gets all grippy. People who don't know what they're talking about always say, if you put some meat on your bones you wouldn't be cold. But if cold signals your body to use calories to generate heat and that in turn signals hunger there's no way to put the meat on the bones...they cycle just goes on and on. A lot of times I don't think about food when I'm cold though. I just want to hunker down under some layers with a beanie and gloves. As I said...something for me to think on further.
  • Very interesting article. I found when I lived in the Philippines, in Manila, I didn't have much appetite, as it was hot all of the time. When we went north, up into the mountains, I gained a ravenous appetite and ate like there was no tomorrow! It truly had to do with the heat/cold thing.
  • I've seen this happen in my gastric bypass patients. They're obviously morbidly obese (or they wouldn't be getting the operation) with bad joints. When they exercise in the pool, their appetites and subsequently, their weight increases. So I'd tell them to jump into the hot tub for a few minutes after the workout. That seemed to help curb the appetite.
  • First of all, I am NEVER hungry after a workout and the weather does not matter. I force myself to eat and I am only eating for fuel at that point. It is easy for me to make good choices because I don't have the hungry monster making decisions for me.

I do find that I am cold much of the time whether I eat or not. But it easier to get warm after eating. If I take an ice bath (as I often do) then I am cold regardless of how much I eat until my body heats up. This is not usually until I am in my office ( a super heated, uncontrollable environment. )
