Platelet Rich Plasma - anyone done it?

Hello, I have been dealing with hamstring pain since October on and off. Have been doing strengthening and stretching and still a problem. Went to see dr and using ultrasound they sound it's a problem with the tendon by the hamstring and recommend PRP. Rest for a week is recommended and then gradual increase from there.

A race is I'm Madison, Beginning September so getting nervous.

Anyone have this treatment before?

Any other thoughts on hamstring injuries or tendon problems.

Am very upset at this as I am fitter than I have ever been before.....but with this, I feel a mess.

Appreciate thoughts!!

  • Had/ have this problem since last July. PT, accupuncture, ART and two PRP injections and then went for neurokinetic therapy. The PRP may have helped a little and the. The NKT was helping.
  • Thanks Robert - did you have to rest after the PRP? They are saying a week which is going to kill me! Any negative effects of the treatment? Sounds like it wasn't that helpful to you however...
  • After the first injection there was no running for four weeks then after the second only easy running a few days after. Six months later and I'm still running my old marathon pace as my fast intervals. I have been doing IM training so it hasn't been a priority now anyway. I don't regret doing the PRP, but I don't know if it was what helped amongst all the other treatments.
  • New England journal of medicine recently reported no benefit from PRP. http://nej.md/1pblzgl
  • Thanks Jason, gives me something to think about.
  • Thanks all...just a quick update, got the PRP a week and a half ago. No running since and seeing ART guy now. Let's see. Overall just depressed at having an injury...
  • Hello Robert, checking in again for your thoughts. I can see improvement since the procedure...now 4 weeks ago. Am still having pain now. Based on the fact you have dealt with this injury, would you recommend I still do A race? IM Madison is sept 7th so time getting short. There is no way I will be 100% but still debating in my head if I should do it.

    Any thoughts would be fantastic!

    Thanks.

  • I am still dealing with issues but have been trainig better and better through a HIM at start of June and AC challenge end of June. My training is going even better for IMMT. I think the key for me has been getting the glute to fire so it can get stronger and do it's job instead of tiring early and stressing the hamstring. The article quoted by Jason is for hamstring injury and I think we have been suffering with hamstring tendonosis. For me the neurokinetic therapy has had the best success in letting me strengthen my glutes and i have only recently been able to increase my paces and power intervals. I revised my expectations and have been training and racing and will race IMMT with lower vDOT and FTP then last year. Focus on fun and finishing. You have to see where your training is and figure whether you can safely finish and in a time you will be able to enjoy even if it isn't a PR. At the AC challenge I could feel when the glutes tired out and the hamstring started cramping but things are better on my 19 mile run last week and my mile repeats and more concerted effort on my bridges and prone leg lifts. Good luck. Keep working at it.
  • Thanks Robert, will have to look into NKT as well. My ART guy said the same thing about the glutes...they are not working hard enough. Good to hear that your training is coming along....and let's keep in touch as things progress. Great to hear you have IMMT coming up...good luck with training and will talk soon.
