Hed Ardennes

After cracking the hub flange on my old 2004 Zipp 404 and wearing out a set of Bontrager race lites, I am looking for a new set of training rims.  Has anyone ridden the HED Ardennes or Ardennes plus?  Is the wider rim worth the extra $$?

  • I just put a set of Ardennes Plus LT on my new road bike. Put some Continental GP4000S 25mm tires on it. Very comfortable ride.
  • I have the Belgium 23 (which I *think* is the same as the ardennes), and it feels great. Truth be told, though, I cannot tell the difference between this wheel (24h, PT hub) and it's predecessor, which was a 32h , 21mm Mavic Open Pro.

(Quick aside:I have a suspicion that a lot of the "I felt an immediate difference" claims that riders make about wheels, frame materials, tires, and other spendy things are 99% mental. I don't think I'm propreoceptively dense ... I just think there's a justification factor that kicks in after buying something new and improved. It's not a popular opinion, though!)
  • I ended up with some 2012 Ardnennes SL that I got on closeout. Wow! Those wheels really roll and roll smoothly! The wider rim really soaks up rougher pavement and chipseal and the seem very FAST! compared to other training type wheels Ive ridden.

  • I've had a Hed Belgium PT rear wheel since '10. Had a matching front until I left it in a parking lot after having leaned it against my struck. Have a Zipp Something on there now. Anyway, these Hed training wheels are great. Thousands of miles on mine.

Also: it's amazing the difference between a wheel that is in true, and one that is wobbly, in terms of road feel.
