Magellan Cyclo 505

Anyone have one?  Hear anything about them?  I know the rule is not to buy any "new" tech until the bugs are worked out but I'm really intrigued by the map/GPS/turn-by-turn nav functions.  (As someone who gets lost somewhat frequently on rides....)  Would love to not have to have and try to read a cue sheet all the time or figure out where to ride....

  • Kim...I know nothing about this (just saw it advertised for first time today in fact), but I have a Garmin 800 (not the newer 810) and it allows downloading created courses (or one someone else rode and you steal) with directions/map.  Map is displayed, with arrows to indicate direction you should turn.  If you get "of course" it beeps at you.

I used it at the IMTX training camp and it definitely helped.  The screen is small, so it's not as handy as a car GPS unit and it's a little hard to see the details while riding, but it is helpful.

I have no idea how this new device compares in price to a Garmin 800 or the differences b/w the 800 and 810, etc.  Just saw your question and thought I'd pass on that I think the 800 will do what you're wanting and may be cheaper?.....it's been around for years now.

  • Interesting @ Jeff. I never even really thought much about cycling gps as I already have too many cycling toys. (Joule, Garmin 910xt plus Mapmy ride) Generally, if I find myself lost or just wanting confirmation that I'm not going off course, I use Mapmyride. I dont NEED this, but it would actually be more of a safety thing (ie not trying to read and ride) than anything else.

I will look into the Garmin as well. The bike shop that posted about it seemed to think it blew Garmin out of the water. Maybe due to the ride creation feature? You tell it how long or far you want to ride, throw in some specs (ie no main roads) and it will create a route for you....
