July 4th flash Challenge - Up, up and away
This is an "unsanctioned" Challenge to everyone in da Haus.
It's simple... See who can accumulate the most feet of Ascent in One Single ride this weekend, preferably on the 4th of July! That's it...
No complicated spreadsheet or badges awarded, just make it an epic day of climbing. Bonus points for pictures. Bonus points if you're wearing patriotic gear. You can also add run ft of ascent as well if you'd prefer to do some hill repeats. No need to debate other ideas, because anything else is also welcome... If you're a flat-lander and have no hills nearby, then just do something else epic and share it here (i.e. Do X hours in your big ring or low cadence or X hours ridden in 90 degree heat, etc, etc. etc...
Game on!

Hmm, Ottawa cell in LP this weekend so I gotta play along on this. Hmm Veterans memorial highway climb might be in the books !
OK, I'm going to go for longest uninterrupted climb - sea level to 5500' in 17 miles? Assuming I can get my road bike rear wheel trued.
@Al- you are an animal! Didn't you just finish an Ironman? I know you said you took it easy, but you still covered 140.6 miles in a dam impressive time! I wish I was as young as you!
I didn't say how long it was going to take me to go 17 miles And then I get to coast back down!
Okay listening to Al and Johnny Boy I definitely have to challenge myself and the Ottawa boy's on the Vet climb after our RR on Sat !

If you and Trevor are doing that climb, i am in too
10,079' of climbing in 101.5 miles over 6:08.
IF of 0.79 for 6hrs... (245W)
Did a 3.1mi brick run after and shockingly felt great!
Well, my ride wasn't long or high but it was epic because I got to sneak my friend out of her house at 0600, leave our kids with the husbands and ride away. We never get to ride together. Our schedules rarely mesh. Then came home and bricked a run. No IT issue so far today. Feel really good. Have a great day guys.

so to get to Michigan you stay straight and if you take a right you end up in New Jersey......got it!
Yesterday I scored a rare double - an increase in both SAUs and CTL.
My wife's sister had called a few days ago, saying she was in Port Townsend (90- minutes away) with two grandkids @ Fiddle Camp. My wife not only likes her sister, but also used to be a fiddle camp aficionado, taking our youngest daughter to one in San Diego year after year (didn't work - she's now the bass player in an all girl post punk band). Cheryl said she'd like to go, but didn't want to drive there all alone. An hour west of the camp is a loooong climb, from sea level to the heart of Olympic National Park, Hurricane Ridge. Bingo. I drop her off to sit through the 4 hour instructor's concert, head up the 17 mile climb, arrive back for a short visit with sister-in-law, and head back home tired with both of us happy!
I preceded the trip with a 5 mile run in 40:50: http://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/535375234
Then up 4600' in one gulp, five miles @ 7%, the rest @ 5%. I turned around a half mile from the top when It started to rain, which made for a character building descent: http://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/535375255
Al...you are not human. How did you do that one week after IMCdA.....I know you didn't have to kill yourself to get that AG win, but still.....I was just beginning to walk normally one week later.

Biking 3400 miles in 58 days when I crossed the country in '97 taught me a thing or two about what's possible day after day on the bike. And having 20 IM finishes + 3 DNFs has shown me its only when one reaches really deep in the last 10 miles of the run that it becomes a challenge to get back to serious training within a week. Otherwise it's no worse than what we do on any given weekend in the last two months of training.
Well done Mr. Ross, well done. But fans everywhere want to know.....did Nate join the Whiteface climb?
So my 2-day total is 201.6 mi with 14,713' of climbing...
I can just imagine Steve Ross climbing like a madman, staring at his Garmin and refusing to stop until he passed 10,080'... But that Whiteface climb is legit and way harder than my next day's ride, a lot of my 2nd day's elevation was on easy rollers... I won't lie though, I was totally crushed by the end of my 2nd ride.
Ooops, sorry, I meant Brent.......
@Keith, Brent was and he was a strong player for sure !
