Strava Newbie Question

I'm just discovering Strava and looking at some stats and wondering if the "rule" for segments is that they should be solo efforts vs. drafting?  It looks like some of the stats would clearly indicate drafting (ie 50 watts lower with the same results) and just wondering.....  Thanks!

  • It's a total crapshoot.   Mix of roadies and solo riders.

  • There are no rules.... Lots of people work together and will tow each other via drafting for the KOM's even the pro's .... They will also wait for a very windy day in favor for segment ....
  • Interesting. I wish I had discovered this sooner.... Sometimes it's the little things that get the competitive mojo going! Just downloaded my Garmin data and found I have a few decent placings and got an alert that someone stole my QOM (that I didn't even know I had). So I'll be defending that this week with my VO2 intervals....

But for now, I'm off to run before it rains. Def. not getting any QOMs in running....
  • i started to see segments that i am top 10 in (the fast doodes must be missing them) and noticed that i am seconds away from a friend, so i focus on 3-5 of them on a long ride... all solo efforts...
  • Scott- Yeah, I'm trying to do the same thing, although I'm tempted to create a "Strava segment route" that connects a whol ebunch of segments to bang them all out in one ride. LOL I'm actually in the top 5 on flat/downhill segments and the bottom of climbs (literally!) Just makes things a little more interesting!

They need to develop a new acronymn for me... QOF... Queen of the Flats!
  • Strava can be fun and useful if you train via courses vs intervals. That is, I don't so much do intervals, but rather I have a go-to list of routes and courses that I'll hit, depending on what I'm feeling that day. Over time you create a long history of performances on these rides across a wide range of fitness and body comps. These serve as a reminder of where you were on Course X by Date Y vs where you are today, etc. I can be motivating and depressing at the same time .

Right now I'm very glad that I wasn't on Strava in 2010, when I was training for Everest Challenge and was at >4.4w/kg, or in 2011 when I was training for IMWI. It would suck to see that cat in my profile every day....

  • Got 5 QOMs tonight, but only 1 email from Strava. I feel ripped off. LOL
  • One other note since you referenced power is that number is not always real. Meaning, STRAVA will estimate power based on speed over "known" elevation profiles from the USGS and using the data you gave it for the weight of you and your bike. If you have a power meter, it will use that data, but if not, it will fill in the blanks. This "fill in the blanks" data is only as good as the assumptions made by the software and weights supplied by the ride. SOOOOOO, take it with a grain of salt.
  • Dino- yeah, I noticed that when I saw the little lightning bolts next to the power number when using the data from my Garmin vs the app. I just thought it meant I was fast like lightning. Lol
