"Spiking" my perform

I've never been one to get cramps, with the exception of in feet/calves toward end of 4K plus swims last year in preparing for IMFL. But just to be safe, and to make sure I hit prescribed 1000 mg/hr. sodium recommendation, I used S caps last year.

Been going without the S caps this year (in wk 18 of HIM plan), and everything fine....taking in about 750 mg/hr on bike rides...until started with a few cramps about halfway thru a 3K swim WKO last Friday.....the day before my 2nd RR. This had never happened before, and felt a little funky even afterward.

Not wanting to have my RR messed with, but never having liked swallowing the S caps while riding, I decided to just add 1/2 a S cap (about 170 mg Na) to each of my bottles of perform. Everything went fine....no gut issues, and had a really good RR....but just curious if there is any definite con to this practice, and any other opinions, experiences, or input about it.

  • Everyone is different but I think the Perform has more than enough electrolytes in it to work for most. The con to too much sodium is edema... which happened last time I "spiked" my drinks during a race.
  • Just a question, do the E caps dissolve in the perform? It seems like when I tried electrolyte capsules before the powder just floated on top.
  • @ Jodi....I too saw the powder floating on top when I poured it in, but just assumed that it dissolved when I shook it up, and FWIW I didn't taste any undissolved powder when drinking.
