Short Course week of July 13-20

I enter the last week of Get faster plan before starting my IM build for B2B BUT I still have 2 short course races to go.  on my 45 mile ride yesterday, the Garmin said the humidity was 100%. It wasn't raining anything but sweat. Today is supposed to be an off day before testing but I will probably swim this afternoon anyway just because I need it.

What is up with your week?

  • This past weekend I completed that crazy triple I mentioned last week … Friday night with a 5K, Saturday late afternoon (5:30PM) was the Duathlon (2-16-2) and early Sunday morning (6:15 AM) Sprint Triathlon. It was a mixed bag of great success and concern. The success is that I won my AG in all three  !Boom!

I ran well in the 5K but the down side came when, for no apparent reason, I was not able to run very fast Saturday or Sunday as my right upper hamstring / right glute seemed to not fire. I could jog (with discomfort) but not do any strides or easily run at pace. Walking was fine and it did not bother me on the bike, but running was a struggle. Fortunately I was able to build a lead on the Swim & Bike and hold on thru the run.

I did a Google search and the likely issue is with the Piriformis muscle. I posted a note on the EN Medical Forum about Piriformis Syndrome - I'll see what others think.

This week is about recovery and patience … my main question is “How long will *that* take?”  That’s me being patient.

  • Jim Huge Congrats on the race success but sorry to hear about the hip-thigh problem. Stretch, stretch, stretch and nonsteroidals by mouth. PT often helps too
  • @Jim - I have some stretches to send along to you. I have major piriformis issues and think these will provide relief. Will start making PDF's and try to figure out how to upload them to you.
  • Elizabeth - Thanks.

After a couple of days off, it feels better but I've not run on it yet and don't plan to until Thursday. And that will be very light. I'm racing the Door County Sprint on Saturday ....

  • Hello Everyone!

I just finished IMCDA a few weeks ago and I am now in my 3rd and last week of transition. I race the USAT Nationals on August 9th and I am in some serious need of mojo! I have been eating like a pig and feeling pretty lazy. I need to get back to work! Next week I start week 2 of the Get Faster plan targeting a running race in September. I will train right through Nationals, not really any time to taper. I will then race a local Oly in October that I really want to do well in, so after Get Faster I am jumping into the official Short Course training plan and will properly taper. The race forums were awesome in my build up for IMCDA so I plan on using this forum similarly!
  • OH BABY what a run!!! Finally, after 2 weeks of pink eye x2, double ear infection, I AM BACK! My mojo is coming to a boil and i'm full steam ahead.  I actually smiled as I was heading out.

I will say that 2x800 z5 is evil. Pure evil on a 87 degree day. Then followed by 40 min of z3. But I got it done. I would have done it 0700 but my husband conspired against me. He helped me clean up yesterday and moved my running shoes. Then covered them with a blanket. Do you think I could find them?? Nope! So I had to wait for him to come home and find them. So ran at 1100. I was lucky too. As I was running there were a bunch of old guys watering their front lawns. Well, they were happy to water me too! That felt sooooo good. They got a laugh out of it.

Thanks everyone on their advice. Still not sure about Oceanside. My run durability is not there yet. Running is so hard. But i'm starting to embrace the suck more and more.

Have a wonderful, hot, delicious day! Remember, 6 months ago what we were all whining about.

  • Congratulations Jacklyn! Way to get it done!
  • ................feeling very tired and bump on a log-ish. Been super busy with work (I have a day job and have my own business), juggling kids, their summer vacation and trying to keep it all together. I missed Thursday's ride and Friday's swim due to prep for a business event I have this afternoon. My youngest is at a sleepover and my eldest just left with my DH for her third tri of the season. I am debating as to whether to go ride or just chill and pick up again on Monday. I will check in later to let you know what I ended up doing.

    Love reading all the posts!
  • @ Elizabeth, Mental health days are recovery too, just not physical. Take it if you need it and come back mentally refreshed.

Swam yesterday 600,500,400,300,200,100. still slow but steady.

Ride today 2:45 with Z4 intervals. nice and cool for a change. Yay.

    TSS 203, I'll take that.
  • @ Elizabeth- Sounds like mom needs a day off and some ice cream. I found it is just as important to recognize the emotional need for a day off too. I hope you did something that allowed you to enjoy A LITTLE SUMMER TOO. Not just run around like crazy. Execution is all mental. Not physical. Enjoy and feel better. Let us know if you need anything.
