Bryan's Vacation Training Plan

Coach,

I have a family vacation in Spain from August 7 to August 27. At that time, I will be in the midst of the Advanced Half Ironman training plan (approximately weeks 17 and 18) in preparation for the Survival of the Shawanagunks on September 7. I will be able to get the running in and should be able to swim, but biking could be difficult.

How should I adjust the plan given this situation? It is a key time and I want to get the training in, but biking may not be feasible. I was thinking about converting it to a run-heavy plan, which may make sense given that the Survival of the Shawanagunks is a little lighter on biking (approximately 30 miles) and a little heavier on the run (approximately 18 miles). How do you think I should adjust the tranining while on vacation?

Best,

Bryan

  • I would not sweat the bike. You'll have a full week when you come back to pick it back up. I'd plan on biking a bit more that first week of August (4x?) and then running as consistently as you can. You can do the FTP and Long Runs as you see fit, then fill extra space with 45' runs at Zone2 effort.

We need to balance the great vacation stuff with some fitness but we don't want the workouts to drive your time over there.
