Bike Componets

My brothers new bike is coming in and he was just told that the Ultrega group was not available that they upgraded him to the 105, is the 105 better than Ultrega.

Thanks

  • Steve, 105 is a step down from ultegra. Definitely not an upgrade
  • Steve, what Mike said.  I'd asks someone at the shop again what's deal this the component change and see if he gets the same response.  Perhaps this was somone new and they made a mistake.

Otherwise I'll add that a comment like this from a bike shop would lead me to ask some probing questions about other upgrades I could get.  It's only one comment but seems like a dishonest practice to not give a discount to your brother for lower grade components. If it was me and I got a similar response a second time (upgaded to 105)  I would go in and tell the shop that I prefer the downgrade to Dura-Ace components and expect a discount on the bike.

Hopefully it was someone new but you never know.

Here's the wikipedia entry for shimano bike component levels:

  • That is what I thought, but I wanted to confirm. He is going to double check what they said, I told him unless the discount the bike tell them to wait for the ultrega.

  • I'd tell him to wait for the Ultegra. If you try and upgrade later, it will typically be very expensive, especially if you buy the components one at a time.

I think Ultegra is probably the best value for Shimano IMHO.

  • Like what everyone else mentioned, especially the one that 105 is the 'tier-below' ultegra - however, if he can work a good discount then nothing wrong at all with 105; 'new' / 2010 105 is probably as good (if not better) than say 2008/09 ultegra so not worth getting too geeked about - probably better than what pro's were using 3-4 years ago! :-)
  • Problem solved, they were suppose to put shimano 105 pedals but instead they are putting on the ultrega pedals, so he is making out.

Good to hear a bike shop doing the right thing, and nice for me since I am the one who recommended the shop.

    Thanks

  • If info from my bicycle shop days a decade ago are still true, 105 is last year's Ultegra. Ultegra/105 brakes are the same thing, with different decals. Does anyone know if this is still true?
