Protein in Urine

So I just had a physical and my urine test came back at +2 for protein (target is 0).  Waiting for dr. to call me back but from playing internet doctor, it looks like strenuous physical activity can cause that so probably "normal" for me, but just wondering if anyone else has encountered this?  Hopefully dr. will call back tomorrow....  Thanks!

  • I had a client that happened to as well. After further tests, it was determined that it was from exercise.
  • Yeah, just talked to dr. They're having me do another test after 24 hrs. no exercise, just to be sure.
  • Kim, I am not a Dr. but I know your body cannot store excess protein not used like it can with carbs and fat.  Your body will expel unused protein through the urine meaning, if your protein intake is too high, you would expect to see it in the urine.  Consider evaluating how much protein you need vs. what you are taking in and making an adjustment if needed.  Excess protein will require your kidneys work harder to filter and expel through the urine.....

  • Did you get your second results back yet??  Normal kidneys will not excrete "extra" protein unless there is a good reason...thank goodness exercise is one of them.  If the test is positive again, your doc should do further tests (albumen, serum and urine electrophoresis) to figure out what kind of protein and exactly how much is being excreted.
  • Leslie- Thanks for asking! Re-test was fine. After 24+ hours of no exercise, all is good.
