New (to me) nutritional products 'no more gels'
Hi all - any possibility some WSM or other nutrition 'savvy' member can do a compare/contrast on these products? They have been recommended to me by a friend who has a long history of intolerance to most brands but not this.
Not sure about the claim that 'you'll never need to add gels to your race diet' - maybe you can drink this stuff in high concentrate and not suffer? Who knows.
Any assistance would help, thanks. Here's the link: http://web.me.com/yoursportsfuel/Yo...n_man.html
I was going to speak with Infinit UK as well but these guys certainly look worth a try unless the consensus is that its lacking in some respects - I don't usually have stomach issues with sports drinks so not getting too geeked out by it.
What do you think?
Thanks,
Dave

On race day, my philosophy is the simpler, the better. Two concepts when this is applied to nutrition:
1. It's harder for the body to deal with more complex foods such as long chain carbs and protein, compared to simple 6 carbon sugars like fructose, sucrose, and glucose. Just takes more time and precious energy resources for the gut to break them down for use, and for the cells to transfer them inside.
2. Carrying stuff adds weight and increases chances for losing things on the course.
All other things being equal, using what is available at the aid station deals with the second concern. On the run especially, sticking with gatorade, coke and water is the way to go to deal with both concerns.
On the bike, you may have a bit more leeway regarding concern #1, at least for the first 60-70% of the ride. So more complex carbs, and a bit of protein, which is in this "Ultra-Fuel" is OK, IF you can tolerate it, and it works in a race rehearsal. Meaning, you don't feel bonked at any time during your brick run.
Al, what's your nutrition weapon of choice?
* gel 15 before race with water.
* water only first 30' of bike
* concentrated infinit every 15' thereafter on bike with water as needed.
* run is alternating water/g'ade, water/g'ade, gel/water for a three-aid station cycle until I go coke/water.
done.

David - I do what P says above, save for substituting Hammer Perpetuem for the Infinit. My SECRET weapon is Clif Shot Bloks. I keep one "between my cheek and gums" (an old US TV ad allusion) at all times on the bike and run. Each 30 cal blok lasts 60-80 minutes, so it's not for the calories. It (a) helps me avoid spitting especially while running and (b) provides a constant glucose infusion to my mouth, which supposedly makes the brain think there's more sugar coming, so it's willing to keep working, no matter what the blood sugar level is.
Al,
I am definetely going to try the Clif Block strategy! Thanks.
I just took a look at this and it does seem way too complicated for my tastes. I don't want to have to deal with two different fuels on the bike. Just give me one thing that works and I'm a happy camper. Their suposition that starch isn't a carb kind of confuses me.
That said, if you want to try it and see if it works for you then go for it.
I will say that there is all sorts of crazy nutrition supplements here in France. There was a HUGE section of the Paris marathon expo devoted to them. Too bad my French isn't better so I could understand what they were claiming.
Anyways, gonna try Infinit and see if that works, be good to keep things consistent within the Haus if I can.
Thanks,
Dave
ps. Penny, how'd the race go? Watched the elite's finish on TV (was live on Eurosport over here) - looked ideal conditions.
@David: Went well. Conditions were good, but a little weird. Cool, but the sun made you hot so you sweat, then the wind would hit and make you cold. I'll post a race report soon. Off to find some Nutella. . . .
What exactly do you mean by "concentrated Infinit every 15' thereafter on bike with water as needed"? How do you prepare/load your bike up with Infinit? I have a very sensitive stomach and I can only handle Infinit on the bike. The problem then becomes drinking 1 bottle per hour (240 calories) + water=having to stop and pee A LOT. I want to cut down on those pit stops, if you know what I mean.
Thanks,
Amy
@Amy: I'm not CoachP (obviously) but I think what he means is he takes a swig of his concentrated Infinit every 15 minutes and, I would guess, a swig of water to dilute the Infinit. When you are working with a concentrated bottle, you still have to dilute it with water to keep GI issues from happening.
You may want to experiment with learning how to pee on the bike. There have been a multitude of discussions on this topic in the Wormen's Forum. You can search the archived version or start a new topic there for help.
