Week of Aug 4-10

New week team!

my weekend workouts did not go quite as planned due to my daughter's 18th birthday party.  Too much shrimp, key lime cheesecake and peach ice cream and my first 2 beer day in months.  Still got in a couple of good runs and a 50 mile ride Sat AM.  Oh, and did I mentioned that it rained most of the weekend?  Next weekend is screwed since I go to NC to look for a house so I guess I am gonna be working it this week.  As Jim said, Sometimes life just gets in the way...

18 years old, I can't believe that...

  • @ Cuz Ralph- Congrats DAD! That's wonderful.

My week was AWESOME! I had a personal goal of running my first 6 miler by the end of the year. DONE!!!!" I ran 6 miles, I ran 6 miles". WOOT WOOT!  I ran it twice this week. My sprint tri did more for my running confidence than anything so far. My legs are pretty sore. The best part is I ran it at a 10:30 pace. Coach P. did say I have super powers. Heeheee.

Have a great day tomorrow. The air quality here is pretty bad due to a fire south of us. I might, gasp, have to go run on a treadmill. If I do can you guys send my sympathy?

  • Yeah Jackie,
I did 6 miles Friday, biked 50 miles Sat, and then 4.5 miles of VO2 work on Sunday and I was feeling bad about having such and "Off" training weekend till I looked back at what I was doing last year. My average run then was closer to 3.5 miles and I only biked over 50 miles twice in the whole year. It is amazing how one's perspective changes as your perception of what is physically possible for you matures. Keep it going!.
  • @ Cuz Ralph, Thanks.  I know what you mean. A year ago I was "thinking" about doing this.  Looking at EN. Secret squirrel like.  All I was doing was road riding and hadn't swam a lap in 4 years.  I've just never thought of myself as a runner.  I was always injured when I ran track in high school.  Shin splints, tendonitus etc... So did your retrospective look help you feel better about the awesome work your doing? Your an amazing friend and team mate and I can't wait to see what you do too!

I wonder what next year is going to bring????

Here's a question for the group.

What's your goals for next year? Small and large.

One of mine is to run a 10K and run 12 miles.  (small goal).

  • Finish B2B full in Oct with a negative split bike and run. Then I am going to think about Next year after that.
  • Today's brick was hard. Still feeling the run volume from last week. Got it done but boy am I tired.

  • Taper week is here and I got my pre-race massage today!!! I look forward to this more than beer after a race! No injuries, just need more sleep and keep the weight down! leave Thursday for Milwaukee.

Anyone besides Jim Sumara going to be racing Sunday's Sprint race at the USAT nationals?
  • Brick this morning went well - bike mph is up, which I am happy to see. Run, is well, still a struggle. I did a positive split, but did make it 3.13 miles, which I am super pysched for. No more travel so the rest of this month will be dedicated to making the work work.

@Ralph - thanks for sharing. My eldest daughter will be 14 in October, not the milestone of 18, but I share your "I can't believe that...." Cheers to the birthday lady!
  • Jacklyn - good for you! Feet up and get some rest!

  • @Joe - I 'll be there in spirit. Go get 'em man, You guys represent the team! Good Luck.

Swim today. Boy I love those sprint swim intervals... NOT!
  • Visited a sports med doc today and it was quickly determined that I have hamstring tendinitis where it connects to the pelvis. There is a connection to the piriformis I strained 3 weeks ago. Not good. With the piriformis syndrome I could run reasonably well, but not so with a strained hamstring. I'll layoff running until Sunday's race. This sucks.
  • @ Jim- I see SAU's in your future. Sorry to hear that your leg is still bothering you. Take care of yourself. Races come and races go.

  • @Jim - sorry to hear that! Will be on the lookout for you! You still have quite a bit of speed in those legs!
  • Went to Physical Therapy yesterday and he worked the upper hamstring pretty good - massage and stretching.  Pretty painful today. I go back to PT today and tomorrow as we're trying to be aggressive to see if I can make it to Sunday's race.  I have to say that I could not run today if I had to ... its that painful.  I biked this morning and it was noticeable but OK.

Need a miracle or more time - right now I'm a little short on both. I'll have to see if I make any progress by this weekend.
  • @Jim,

Good luck tomorrow. Will be sending good thoughts and good luck your way.
  • 2nd to last long ride today ~ with 2x18 min pushes. I found a fairly rural route and at 7 am the roads were pretty quiet.
Speed is coming along, but still having a tough time on the run.
@ Jacklyn - so appreciate your comment of races come and go. Just need to happy I am doing a race this year!
  • @ Elizabeth-Thanks.  I have to keep reminding myself that everything comes with time. The run isn't my strength either. I suck actually! But as the saying goes," Do the hard things until they become the easy things."  That's my mantra as i'm running. Your doing a great job. Don't let doubt eat at you. As my husband keeps reminding me ( almost daily) How many other people in town can do what your doing?!

Time to put your feet up and have a beer. You've earned it.
