Garmin Connect Modern

I noticed a lot of energy around this on a Dashboard thread - since those disappear in time, thought I'd start a discussion opportunity in the Forums. A place to vent, and maybe share whatever meager useful tips there might be on how to make this work.

Is there a way to create intervals after the fact in the file, or do I just have to live with whatever intervals were created during the workout? Not a big deal to me, as I use PowerAgent (Saris) and WKO+ primarily to analyze my bike files, and create intervals during my runs with the Lap button, but, still …

Also, why can't I go back to Classic (is that dead now), and why does Garmin Training Center no longer work (not that IT was ever much use).

  • I never switched to the modern look and I'm still using the classic design. I have a button next to my login that says switch to modern and I just ignore it until they turn it off permanently. Once you're in modern I assume the switch to classic button is no longer available.
  • As of a few weeks ago (mid July), there were still problems with the Mac implementation of the new data uploading system (Garmin Express) and new GC. However, it is possible to opt out of both of them and continue to use the old system, which continues to work fine. As far as I know, there is no problem going back to Classic, but that may be browser/OS dependent. I still use Classic exclusively.

I experimented with the modern, hoping it would do the one thing that would make me reasonably happy with GC as an exclusive data storage source: post ride selectable "lap" analysis (i.e., breaking up the ride after the fact or looking at "intervals" that aren't marked on the original ride)...but I didn't see that this was possible, so I'm happy to let them take their time to figure out all the other problems while I use the old version (which I have automatically ported over to TP...in case I want to fire up a paid subscription there again). In the meantime, for ride analysis, Golden Cheetah works pretty well!
  • William, are you saying that Golden Cheetah allows you to set the intervals manually?

For example, my Garmin 910 has been auto-lapping at 15 miles and I would like to look at two 28 mile splits instead.

Is that what I could do?
  • Yes, GC lets you set manual intervals after the fact.

One kind of cool feature it also has is to let you search for the n best intervals of any given length. So, for example if you knew you did a bunch of 5 minute intervals but didn't use the lap button, you could go in after the fact and have it pick out the 6 (or whatever) best 5 minute intervals and add them as "laps".
  • Has anyone been able to use Garmin Connect Modern with their Mac? Specifically I have a MacBook Air, latest OS / browser(s), I can login but see no windows or anything beyond a blank screen in both Chrome & Safari. If I manually switch to (connect.garmin.com/dashboard) I get the old windows back and everything is fine.

Of course this morning, I cannot even log in... Grrr.

    Thoughts?

I went to upload last nights ride to Garmin express and got the message "there was a problem comminicating with garmin servers. Please try again later". Not sure if this is related but sounds like something on their end.
  • I get a blank page when I try to sign in on my Mac desktop. I have a third party app on my iPad which shows my connect workouts, and it says, "Error connecting to Garmin Connect." The Garmin Mobile App is working, but I have not tried to upload on it. I can see all my wkos that way. Garmin Express says, "Unable to conner with Garmin services." Seems like they fiddled with things one too many times?

I've had something similar happen on one of my PCs.  I had to clear the cache of the browser and then things worked as expected in Modern.  Still find modern frustrating at times so I've switched back to the old style for the time being.
  • Modern works on my Macbook Air (Mid-2013) running Mavericks and latest Safari

To switch from Modern back to Classic, hover over the little head icon on the left and select Switch to Classic

  • OK, I've been tinkering with this stuff trying to get caught up since I'm about to start working out with a different purpose and direction come October. On call, been at work off and on, so using the time in between.

    Thoughts, in no particular order...

    1. Garmin Express trumps Ant Agent. I downloaded Ant Agent cuz I noticed it had disappeared. Thinking I needed it. When I opened Garmin Express, Ant Agent disappears altogether.

    2. I was able to send workouts from my 310xt, thru Garmin Express via the ant+ stick, to Garmin Connect on my windows based laptop.

    3. As far as I can tell, my tapiriik.com setup must've worked. See no reason that it didn't. But, I had forgotten about it. Spent some time trying to upload to Strava. Workouts made it to Strava and I'm not sure if it was me doing it or Tapiriik moving it from my Garmin Connect.

    4. I still do not see a place to pay the $2 donation to tapiriik.

    5. Garmin Connect and Garmin Express and Garmin 310xt having a hard time syncing 'User Setting' and 'HR' info back and forth. Looks like it didn't affect the transfer of the workouts, though. And, that's the thing that counts.

Next week will be the first week where I'll try to upload daily, at least until I've done it enough to where I'm confident doing it, not 'hoping' this works. That may be what helps more than anything else.
