Paul's Power Test question

Coach- Next week is my taper week for IM70.3 Lake Stevens.  My question is very specific: can I replace the assigned 60 min bike work-out for Tuesday (includes 3 x 8mins Z4) with a 60 min drainer ride that includes a 20 min power test?  I am one week into the IM plan pointing for IMFL and this is supposed to be a low volume test week.  However, because I have Powerman Zofingen hard on the heels of Lake Stevens, I want to keep building volume this week and only taper 1 week for Lake Stevens.  Would doing a power test early in the week compromise the taper?   I would do the test early Tuesday morning because I'm flying out late Tuesday afternoon.  Everything else that week would be per the 70.3 final week plan.

Can you do the test outdoors? That would be give you a more accurate result, important considering that you're racing outdoors.

  • Hey Rich, can you believe I've never done an outdoor power test!? Every single one has been indoors using Spinervals "Threshold Test and Sufferfest". The warm-up protocol is a little different but includes 3x1min hard, 3 mins very hard then the 20 min test followed by 3 x 30 secs Max. Total DVD is 60 mins. Bottomline is I cannot test outdoors except on weekends when I can get to the Suncoast Trail which has a 10 mile uninterrupted section. Was planning on riding about 80 miles Saturday and 60 on Sunday ... as I build toward Zofingen and IMFL.
