wheel truing

Sorry if there is a wrenches thread and I don't know it, but I'd like to true my wheels the best I can but I don't have a truing stand.  anyone attempt it without one?  If so, how?  Thanks for the help.

I have a little gizmo which attaches to the fork or seatstay to give a crude estimate of wobble in the wheel. I never use it, as I have a truing stand - I bought the thing for bike touring. But you can rig up a similar set up yourself with a clamp and a flat head screwdriver. See this web page, about half way down is a picture and description.

  •  Thanks Al.  I'm glad you sent the link, my wheel is a bit more than "a little wobbly".  I may have to bring it in to my LBS because it has the PT hub and I don't want to mess that up.  I like the tips though, I'll see if I can rig that up because my front wheel is off too but not by much.
