CJ Thread

 Hi  Coach,

I'm week 14 of my first IM (IMMD). Did a race last weekend, it was supposed to be a confidence builder after my car accident and surgery 10 weeks ago.

Swim went great, bike too  but run was very disappointing. Just started with power and after downloading my data it doesn't look like I overcooked myself on the bike for this short distance race (average power 155 which is high Z3 low 4). And I don't know why the run was so bad (9:10 min/mile while I was going for at least 7:57 which is my Z2!!). Nutrition was almost ok. Didn't eat my gel at the end of the bike, but I coke mid-run don't think it would have impacted the run from the get-go if it was food related, i would have seen a gradual decrease in my speed, however my speed was about constant (except while running on the soft sand - 0.5 mile at the start, the middle and the end of the run).

Now I feel that all the work I put into this is not worth it. Didn't hit my numbers since the race, motivation is going down the drain. Don't know what to expect for the IM anymore...

Also the video this week is about race rehearsal but it's coming only next week (week 15, am I missing something?)

Thanks

  • CJ - the RR video is to prep you. :) head start style. As for the race, it's not like your kid went to school, studied for years...had one bad test and you call them an idiot and pull them out of school. It could have been hot. You could have been under-hydrated. Or not tapered enough. Or your VI (how you rode it) was too variable....so questions for you:

    - what was your VI?
    - what was your Hr on the bike? Run?
    - what did you drink in the bike?
    - how hot was it during the race?

Not being able to hit the numbers could mean that your initial numbers were off?

    We can do this!!

  • Hi coach, yes you're right, a week after the event, of course I realize that. Was just hard to accept just after the race.

Listen to Jenn Edwards' R report podcasts and realize that I still have so much to learn about power! Learned so much from her. I think I will listen to it a few more times!

    - VI? Just learned about it listening to Jenn's podcast... Will have to look up how to calculate my numbers.
    - HR monitor malfunctioned (got 72 bpm on the bike http://connect.garmin.com/activity/555292010 and a lot of ups and downs on the run with max around 160 http://connect.garmin.com/activity/555292018)
    - Drunk 1.2l on the bike
    - Temperature was hot on the bike (82) and very hot on the beach for the run (88).

Not sure if my numbers are off on the run, tested not long ago. Long run are always very hard, maybe because at the end of it it's like 90 degrees out there. Maybe I should start running before the sun rises or do it on a treadmill?

  • VI was 1.09 for the race
  • sorry I meant 1.019
  • My guess is lack of taper and the conditions conspired against you. A 1.019 means you averaged 155 and your normalized was 158? That's almost better than a surgeon. Are you sure of that?
  • that's what the powermeter says...

So today, I had to stop at a red light (for a 1'xx) during my FTP test. How will this impact my numbers? Should I take that time out of my FTP test and average the section before and after the red light stop to get my average power, OR just include it? Don't really want to re-do the test. I'm week 17 and will use these numbers on race day.

    Thanks coach

  • I'd be impressed if I wasn't so impressed that the numbers I made up were actually the REAL numbers. :) ha! Impressive indeed...I'd just keep the number from your test. Can't be too far off that 158...
  • well, after the test from last week my new FTP is 203. Now, after what you said, I'm wondering if my powermeter need to be re-calibrated. What if that number is too high? should I stick with it for my RR#2 this weekend? I guess it's kinda late to change anything now...
  • I know... I sound like I'm freaking out. I'm not, just want to make sure I won't screw the race because of equipment failure...
and i'm probably a little stressed too image

  • Yes to ride this weekend but you should be able to do a rolling offset on your PM -- google the manual or ask the team in the power/pace forum.
