Best Hotel for IMAZ

I'm sure this has been covered before but can't find it.  I Just found out my college buddies are coming to support my first Ironman race versus our annual football game this year.  I see the hotels on the website, but are there any insider recommendations for a hotel for a group of 20 or so folks.  Preferably a Marriott brand as many are status members.

  • They recently built a Marriott Residence Inn right near the race area.  I think it opened in 2013.  It's called the Marriott Residence Inn Downtown/University.

  • Outstanding!  Thanks a million.

  • They are asking $329/night.  Yikes!
  • Yikes is right! I guess they jumped on the poaching bandwagon due to how close it is to the race site. I stayed at the other Residence Inn in Tempe when I did the race in 2012. It was about 4-5 miles from the race site. Looks like rooms there are $199-$249. Decent location, right across from a huge mall. There were a couple of supermarkets nearby.
  • I've always had good luck with the Best Western on Rural Road / Scottsdale Blvd. Right on the run course, on the other side of the lake.
  • Ive stayed at one of three motels in the general area of the BW Rich mentions ... That BW, Country Inn/Suites, and the Red Lion (used to be Hamton Inn. All are way under $200. Frankly, the BW is the worst of the lot but the closest, the Red Lion the best, but farthest away, where Im staying this year.
  • Simba did say Marriott brand was preferred.

Simba did say Marriott brand was preferred.

Yes, but the BW is directly across the street from In and Out, Starbucks, froyo, burrito and sub shops . And next door is a bit of a dirt ramp you can use to load a heavy motorcycle into the back of a pickup

  • We stayed at the Residence Inn, I had reservations at Fairfield Inn or something and kept checking the RI. The day before the race, the rates at the Residence Inn went down to 180-280. Still pricey, but the convenience was great. I think there might be a Courtyard nearer and somewhere close to the run route is another Springhill suites hotel.
  • Days Inn.    east Tempe.

right next to Dorsey Lane train stop which is very convenient.    can take the train, with your bike, to near transition.

    $50 per room per night.

not high class but fine and cheap
