Honey stinger products/ OSMO

After my epic nutrition fail at IM CDA, I am on the hunt for a new nutrition plan.

I used power gel and perform at CDA with terrible consequences. These two products worked OK in training, but did not work at all in the race. Although I was not "on top" of my feeding/drinking schedule, which was the biggest problem, I think I had too high of a concentration of maltodextin/fructose in my gut. Severe nausea ensued.

I am trying the Stacey Simms approach of "food in the pocket, hydration in the bottle".  I am testing out her OSMO products for my hydration needs. I like the very light flavor, none of that sticky, sweet, mouth-feel that I got with Perform. I am also trying the Honey-stinger waffles and chews for the food part of the equation.

I tried the waffles/chews/OSMO combo today on my 2.5 hour ride. Although this was a pretty short ride, my gut felt good, and I performed well.

Anyone have any good or bad experiences with OSMO or Honey Stinger?

  • Just be careful. The stinger waffles have a high fat content and therefore a slow GI transit time.
  • used stinger waffles a lot back in my much slower days image -mostly on training runs. Only time I had gut issues with using them I also had PBJs and a crazy mix of "magic brews" during my first IM -who knows which/combination set off the purge trigger. I find success in simplification now. I like honey and add some to drink some times as well despite hearing some neg comments. Id say keep trying and -important watch your HR. At some # your gut slows to a halt regardless of what's in there- if you are feeling it-check where your HR is. Also when I get "rebound hypoglycemia" (empty stomach+ simple sugar=BS spike then crash) I get very queasy. A little coke or simple sugar for recovery then as I feel better add back the slower sugar products. Haven't tried OSMO. But I like your plan of moving away from the over sweet drinks.
  • I joined EN specifically to help with nutrition issues.  I screwed up my nutrition at IM St. George in 2011 and ended the day with stomach cramps on the bike and first three miles of the run.  I was using perform and perpetuem.  I know use honey stingers, Gu served on the course and perform.  The honey stingers have made a huge difference for me.
  • I tried the blocks for the first time on the IM Canada course. Palatable and easy to digest; no surprises. But take them with a lot of water - they have a residue.

The gels were horrifitastic. The stuff just stayed in my mouth like ... a glob of honey. And as an aside, I found it amusing that IM Canada - a run course with bears on it - handed out 10,000 packages of honey on course. I'm not a bear expert, but I've seen enough Winnie the Pooh books to know that ain't a grand idea.

I can't eat the wafers because I am addicted. No lie. If I have one, I have to have 20. A buddy and I discovered them as "stroopwaffels" when we were travelling in Holland years ago and must have eaten about 6 dozen each. Every year we give each other a package of 10 for Christmas, and usually eat them on the spot when we're having a holiday drink.

  • FWIW, active has a lot of the Honey Stinger stuff on sale and if you're a VIP, you get an extra 10% off of everything. http://gearup.active.com/mobile/Event.aspx?l=00010835178800000000
  • Thanks for the input!

JW- I ordered some chews from Active.com. Still a decent deal even after paying shipping.

DT- OMG! Those waffles are tasty! I can see how an addiction could happen. I am sure the "real" ones from Holland are much better!

Not super worried about the fat content, as I will alternate the waffles with the chews. I will end up with only 3 waffles max spread over 5.5-6 hrs.
