Oympic then jumping into Ironman

Hi Patrick,

Next week I finish a half-iron plan with an Olympic race on Sunday. After that, Rich has me jumping into week 7 of my intermediate IM plan for AZ after this race. I'm thinking about taking two days off and then picking the plan up on Wednesday. Is that too much rest? Not enough? Any thoughts are appreciated.

Any tips on Olympic execution?

 Thanks!!!

  • @Joe -Good luck on the OLY ...and IMAZ! As Always I defer to what Coach(s) has to say.... But unless you just crush the bike or run and wake up limping you should be feeling ready to train at full tilt in 3-4 days. You MAY "feel" ready earlier if your a run everyday kind of guy.....but your body will appreciate the recovery. Id go with at least one full Off day (stretch/yoga -no impact or intensity) then MAYBY an EZ swim/Spin on bike no run day 2. Then see how you feel after that. You should have recovered glycogen etc by day 3 but if you feel like your running out of gas -call the WKO done and jump back at it on day 4. You should have no problems by day 4. This is advice coming from a older guy (47) but even in my 30s (weight training and running mostly) I found a little "extra" down time always was the better call.
  • Additional concerns here as just looked at next week's plan.  Week 8 of the Ironman plan is a testing week with a Big Day on Saturday.

    Thoughts?

  • Sensible advice David. A buddy called me today and tried to hit me up for an IM distance open water swim on Monday. "It's just a swim" he said. But I thought back on your advice.   I'm sleeping in on Monday. Discretion is the better part of valor.
  • We get so hung up on "loosing fitness" that we rarely give our body's time to really heal -we take staleness as "real loss of abilities too. Recently Ive been coming off the transition plan....mainly focusing on my shoulder rehab etc....but OMG I have been absolutely crushing the shorter bike rides. I raced Vineman in July off of a 220 FTP at 165 NP (felt a bit under pushed but temps where hitting 100 by end. 2 weeks ago I did a Sprint at 298w ave (with turns and hills)/20min and just today id a 25 min ride at 343w/23.3mph ave WFT?? I've only done 3 rides in 3 weeks post IM race where did all this power/speed come from??!! Recovery! Now its time to flog myself again but always keep in mind sometimes you really need to rest hard to see what lies beneath! I still find MY body does best with 2 days in a row per week low/no WKO and STILL needs about 1 in 4-5 weeks to back off .....judging by my transition power bump I likely could have started tapering a bit sooner too......you'll have to play and test.
Some times a swim is "OK" for active recovery....but other times you need to just put your feet up and veg in front of the TV. Good job in listening to your Body first- friends second
  • Big Day and RR's with back to back big bike days are meant to build some massive fatigue. the post big bike weekends have lighter days to follow. Pace your Big day to hold steady power and expect the next day to suck.... but you'll be amazed how by the last big RR ride you are so much better able to pace and tolerate the duration. HR is good but ya gota start using power if you don't already. I use the Ibike Newton only a couple hundred $ though Ive had some issues with it it still works well for me.
