Short Course Week of Aug 11-17

95 degrees today until it rained.  That will slow your pace down a bit.  Just rolled in from finding a house to rent in Winston-Salem.  It was 66-72 degrees there over the weekend.  I think I will be able to get used to that.  Good news is that we found a house, bad news is that I got in no bike this weekend, only run.

New week coming up.

How is everyone doing?  Any Race News?  Lets hear it.

  • Hey - did the short course nationals today and saw Jim Sumara!! So cool to see another team-mate at a race!

I placed 47th in the 50-54, but since I am 54, I was able to "age-up" into the 55-59 and place 21st and qualify for the World Championships in Chicago next year!!

Had a great swim and placed 26th out of 118 in my AG, then took 2nd on the bike, then a lowly 82 on the run. As bad as the run sounds, it was actually my best 5k in several years at a 8:07/mi pace. Overall - did everything right and raced great!

Will continue the short course through next year - strike when it is hot! Work Works!!
  • @Joe - SWEET! you Crushed the bike! nice job. that 5K pace is worth being proud of too. I am starting to get worried about keeping up at bike camp in the spring...

I just want to say how much I love 200 sprint repeats in the pool. NOT! and since the IM swim workouts are getting longer, I can't get it all done in the hour before work so I get to go back this afternoon for more. My Fave!

This is what I hate! getting my bike back from the LBS after a 280$ tune up and I cant shift onto the large front gear and the rear cassette is not shifting on the indexes like it is supposed to. I keep saying I'm not going back but I don't want to drive the 45 miles to the next closest shop. GRRRRR
  • @Joe It was great to meet yesterday. And congrats on making it to the 2015 Worlds! That's outstanding. This is the only activity in the world where aging up is something to look forward to and it sometimes comes with these huge benefits! Great job!

I was able to finish the Sprint and I gave it the best effort I could muster. The high hamstring strain I suffered last week did me in. I finished 32nd (out of 75) in my AG.  I had a fair swim, strong bike and ran a try-and-hang-on pace for the 5K run. Every step running was very painful - even the transitions. Not much to do but endure.

My swim was a little disappointing. I think it might have been the mental cost associated with putting too much on the Swim and Bike knowing that the run would suffer. And the mental strain of dealing with this debilitating injury clearly diverted my focus.

Didn't qualify for the 2015 Worlds but it was worth the try. Now the question is 'Can I recover enough for the 2014 Worlds in Edmonton in 3 weeks?'

  • @Joe- Congrats!

Going to be dropping off the radar for the week. I'm going up to my parents for some fishing fun and general laziness.I'm going to try and defend my title as best fisherman for the 16th year. For some reason my dad can't beat me.  I am taking my running shoes and bike but i'm more interested in family time. Have a greet week everyone. Be safe. See you on the flip side.

  • @Joe - Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@Jim - way to stay strong. A friend recently suggested Anatomy for Runners by Jim Dicharry to me. I have not read it cover to cover, but the content looks promising to me.

Not much to report from here.....still struggling and have to embrace the fact that this is just not going to be my season. My runs have been dreadful - Z1++++, bikes have been satisfactory to good, but nothing like last August, and the swims are meh. PF is still hanging on, but I am able to run 3.25 miles somewhat comfortably so at least I am at distance and a little more, so I should be in an okay place.

Everything aches - even places I didn't know could ache ache. I have eaten GF, vegan, vegetarian and raw vegan to help me get out of this rut. Nada. I started taking Magnesium, a B complex, B12 (b/c I don't eat red meat or fish, but have had chicken this week) zinc, and my juicing kale, carrots and apples. I am trying to do yoga everyday, I've seen two different chiropractors, two orthopedic docs, and an acupuncturist. I don't know where to go next!

I am going to Canandaigua Lake tomorrow afternoon for my swim. I am looking forward to it as this lake is my favorite. My daughters want to go provided I can rent them a couple of SUP's to hang out on while I swim.

    Enjoy the day!

  • Honey! I'm home. Had a nice week at the beach. Unfortunately my parents had to drop and run all the way to Minnesota because the last of my sterling grandparents is passing away. The good part is that she is comfortable and her 15 kids are there with her.

Only ran once this week. Spent most of my time playing tourist.

@Elizabeth- I'm new at this stuff but if things don't seem to be lining up maybe it's time for a couple days off and a cupcake.

Have a great time watching the live action today. Off to work I go.

  • @Elizabeth - I agree with Jacklyn. When I was in Germany for two weeks, for the first week, all I did was run 30-40' easy every other day, with swimming easy for 40' in between for active recovery. Then, the second week just walking with two very easy bike rides for about 1hr. During that time, I went from sore and beat up, to tired, to recovered.

@Jacklyn - sorry to hear about the Minnesota outing for your parents. Bummer. Like the cupcake idea. Good...

@Jim - had a similar injury several years ago. I ended up doing sidestroke to get a stretch there that made a different. In Runner's World. the Dr. whatever his name, has a video on "Weak Butt Syndrome". Check it out.

@Ralph - the Setup Inc races in North Carolina are fantastic! You might even be able to drop into Charlotte for the Time Trial series at LMS! After your IM of course!

  • Kind of a sad morning. My Grandma passed last night. Quietly with her family around her. Still gotta go to work no time to worry about it now. Sounds like yesterday was an AWESOME day of fireworks. Better than the superbowl.

  • @Jacklyn - lots of EN love and light to you. We have another star in the heavens!
