3 Year Plan vs. First Time Finish Guarantee

I am a beginner triathlete.  Age 51, 150 pounds, but quite fit.  I have completed 4 sprints and 2 olympic distances.  I qualified for USAT Nationals in my age group.  My 2 Olympic distance times were 3:15 and 3:40 respectively.  I have an issue with terrible blisters on my toes that interfere with my running.  I want to complete a full ironman and am wondering which program to use.  Thanks.

  • My understanding is that as long as you qualify for FTF, you'll actually end up using both. The FTF has some program requirements, which frankly, are just ways to define using the tools that are available to you in EN. The 3 year plan is a way to consider your fitness over the longer term. You don't need 3 years to be ready for IM, but you won't reach your potential in the first year.

The starting point will be to set up submit a season plan which Rich will then turn into a schedule, defining the specific training programs that you'll want to load up as your training plan, throughout the season. You may progress from Run Durability, to OS (outseason) to a Get Faster Plan, and then into a HIM or IM plan. Or depending on your schedule you may have a different progression.

Assuming you are looking for a IM in 2015, you will likely want to set intermediate goals, as that race is a long way away, and it is easier to stay mentally focused if you are prepping for something in the shorter/medium range.

Best of luck. There is a great knowledge base and community at EN to help you get ready for your first IM.
  • Hi Rosanne,

Brett is correct. To clarify a bit:

    • The Three Year Plan is RnP outlining a path, or growth progression, that we'd like to see our athletes travel upon while with the Team -- objectives, goals, lessons to learn, etc across three year in the sport.
    • The First Time Finish Program is us guaranteeing that if you do what we tell you (read this, do that, learn this over here, etc) you'll finish your first Ironman.

Neither is a training plan, as such, but rather programs and resources we've created to compliment your training with us.
