FTP question

I have an FTP question...  I did a local sprint triathlon today in the wind and rain.  I d/led my power numbers and found that I did the 18 miles in 1:05.  I wasn't going all out and could have pushed it a little harder.  I had a good 4 mile run afterwards. I have not done an outside FTP test, only on the trainer inside.  In side it was 193.  My normal power for this ride was 212.  with the peak 60 being 213.  The peak 30 normal power was 220.  1/3 the ride was right into the wind, 1/3 with a cross wind, and 1/3 with a tailwind.

What should I take from this?  I had been guessing that my outside FTP was around 208 based on other outside training rides.  Can this count as a test and should I just call my new outdoor FTP 213?

Thanks, - Peter

  • I'd bet for purposes of training zones the NP from that ride is a fair approximation. Last year, in the first 3-4 weeks of recovery after an IM, I did a series of weekly time trials, with a sprint race (15 mile bike) thrown into the middle. My FTPs from those were 220, 214, 220 (the race), and then, three weeks later after some real training, 229. But I wouldn't use that race as the FTP to pace an IM off of - I'd think a good FTP test about 2 weeks out would be better.

  • What Al said. Use those numbers for sure, but realized at the EOD 5 watts (208-213) isn't that much of a difference! Ride to them and see how you feel. Nice work!
