bike shorts

Has anyone tried Desoto 400 mile shorts? I am specifically concerned about how low they sit on the model's waist. I am over 50 and want some tummy support, or at least don't want a low cut pair of shorts. I got the new EN shorts and they are ok but no lower than that.Anyone have these shorts? . Suggestions for something similar?

  • I wear the bibs, and I love them. Plenty of support throughout!
  • I have the old design and love them. Ordered a pair of this new design and could not get them much past my knees. They appear to run very small! Not sure why they changed them. I was going to send back and try 2sizes larger. Interested if you find an alternative. I am worried about the low waist too.
  • I originally ordered a med concerned the small would be too small. I did 3 long rides in them and had sway back with the fabric. Their return process was amazing, and I went down to the small. They fit almost like compression, and stay in place. The shorts have a thick, heavy duty waste band that was incredible comfortable around my mid section for my entire race. Only complaint I have is the seam is beginning to fray a bit around the waste band now.
  • Emily and Vicki, If you also ordered EN shorts this year, would you order the same size? I wear a medium normally.
  • I have the Desoto from about 2 years ago and love them I don't know how they compare to this year model or the EN shorts
  • I'm 5' 5" 122 lbs and usually order small or med. I ordered a small in the new desoto. I was thinking of trading for a large but maybe I will try med and work my way up image I'm not used to a compression style.
  • I did not order the the shorts this year in fear they wouldn't be in before my race. I'm about 5'7 128lbs if that helps? You can also call and talk to someone there about fit. They are BEYONd fabulous with their customer service.
  • One thing to keep in mind regarding 400 mile shorts is the chamios pad is HUGE. And you will develop some undercarriage chafing that you wouldn't normal experience in a more modest pad, like the team shorts. I had been using 400 mile shorts exclusively for all 4 of my Ironmans and all the training leading up to those races. I have always been very uncomfortable on the bike after about 3 hours. Switched to a minimal padded short and I can sit for 5 hours in comfort. This is after spending big $$$ on seats and fittings. I realize the conversation is about support but don't forget the reason we wear bike/tri shorts is for the undercarriage comfort.
  • Ditto to what Steve said.
I have the 400 mile shorts and have had Chafe issues in them.
the team Desoto Shorts with less pad do better for me on long rides especially on the inner thigh area.

I will mention that Al Truscott suggested lowering the seatpost a bit when using a thicker pad but I never have tried it.
  • Not sure if there is much of a difference in the female version, but mine are almost a happy medium? I have my cycling bibs that have the large chamois. My femaie desoto 400 mile shorts are minimalist in the middle, and have a raised outer part of the pad, and additional padding for the sits bones. They are not nearly as wide as some of my other bibs.
  • My wife has a pair of the Desoto 400 mile ladies shorts in a L that she has only worn once and she will sell them for $50 if anyone wanths them. She likes Pearl Izumi better. Jus message me if interested.
  • @Ralph, if she likes the pearl Isumi's better...I may get those!
  • I love my bontragers and pearl izumis. I do not like anything from Terry. They have huge pads that ride up the back...yeah, sounds weird right? you should feel them.... really weird.

  • I have found I am riding with less and less padding these days. I do like Terry products but they do go overboard on padding on certain styles.. for rides under 50 miles, I will wear my tri kit bottoms..
  • I ordered a top and a bottom this time, I've normally only worn the singlet (single piece) tri suit. I'm looking forward to putting on running shorts after the bike ride. We'll see if I actually do!

What does everyone prefer? two piece suit or single piece tri suit?

  • I'm a two piece tri suit person.. I like to be able drop my drawers when nature calls...
  • Excellent point. Port-a-potty nimbleness not my strong suit.
