Warmups vs. Total Time question

Ok, sort this one under "stupid question of the day" but I want to make sure I get this right and don't botch my training plan by doing too much or too little each day...

In the training plan for each day, there is what i am considering a "total time" number in the top right corner.  There is also an "EN standard warmup" for the bike and the run...so my question is this: is the warmup supposed to be included as part of the total time in each workout? or, as an example, should a total time bike workout of 60 minutes really be the 25 minute warmup PLUS the 60 minutes bike routine to give me a grand total of an 85 minute workout?

sorry for the dumb one...i am sure you address this somewhere already I just can't seem to find it.  Thanks!

  • Not a dumb question.  The warmups count.  You may need more or less than the standard, and how you approach things depends on where you are in the plan.

The plans are mostly about the work.  For example, there's no way I can swim 3300 yards in an hour when doing 6x5 500 meter repeats, a w/up, and a cool-down.  When I started, I did as much as I could in the hour.  Now that race day approacheth, I do the main sets-time be damned.

On the bike, it's all about time in zone. If it's 3x6 z4, once you hit the main set, see what you have left in z3 or --the plans usually will tell you.  If you're close to race day, you can't stop @ the main set--you need to be sure you're on the bike working.

On the run, it's all about time @ pace.  So if the 60 min wko is 2x1 mi @ z4, warm up, hit the intervals, and then run as you see fit for the rest of the hour if it's near race day.  If it's the OS, do the main set and take a shower--the coaches have said that that's fine too.

  • Edit the above "On the bike working for the prescribed time".
  • whoops--sry--thought this was a 'general training ?"
  • Totally fine, thank you for the info. I should have posted it in the general questions area anyway and what you said makes sense. Much appreciated!
