recommendations for swim mp3 player?

After years of staring at the black line on the bottom of the pool during childhood, I don't think I can keep doing it without some form of entertainment. So I'm thinking of getting an mp3 player to listen to while swimming - any comments or recommendations?

  • Dan-
I have a unit called the Interval from X1 -Audio. It's a waterproof case/ earphone unit for a ipod shuffle that runs $140 w ipod, $99 w/out. I got my shuffle separately on amazon and saved a few $$. Just make sure to buy the correct generation. The unit is relatively small, straps on to my goggles and fits under my swim cap. Sound is decent given that you're submerged. http://www.x-1.com/?gclid=CPKa8eOCssACFQqCfgodvyEAxQ.

    Exorcise through exercise! Good luck
  • Thanks Josiah, do you find that the ear buds fall out at higher speeds (I swim ~1:20 per 100m in the pool) or during flip turns or with non-freestyle strokes?
  • Hey Dan,

I use the finis neptune, and I love it.

I like this style as I wear silicone ear plugs to keep the water out, and this type of player compliments well. Kind of makes you look like a star trek character while wearing, but who cares. I tried the waterproof ipod, but found that the buds fell out frequently. Although, full disclosure, my wife commandeered the ipod, and she love's swimming with it. I guess win win...

    Good luck!

Great race at Tremblant by the way! Way to kill it!

  • Finis Neptune here.  I've tried others but couldn't keep the ear plugs in my ears regardless which tip i tried.  With the neptune this is not an issue.  Just clip them on your goggles and put near your cheekbones and you're good to go.  Sound is passable, but you are underwater so anything is better than nothing.  One note…The first pair i tried kept skipping songs so i called Finis and they replaced them and the 2nd pair has worked flawlessly.

  • I've never had a problem with the earbuds coming out in flipturns or higher speed once I found the right size bud (it comes w/ 4). I was doing sprints on Monday 1:10/100 and everything stayed snug. The other big advantage is using your existing Itunes library & account instead of setting up all new music files. That said, DCRM is hands down THE expert on all things tri-gear related so take a serious look @ Neptune too.

    Cheers
  • Dan,

I like the Swimman iPod Shuffle. It is basically an iPod Shuffle that has been waterproofed by the company. I believe it is an Australian company. I have used mine for several years. It is an older model Shuffle (generation 2 or 3), and resembles a small stick of gum. It clamps to my goggle strap and weighs nothing, noda.

My only issue is the earbuds. They wear out after around two years. When the ear plug tips wear out, they don't stay in well.  The earbuds are expensive to replace, $100, so I am looking for an alternate pair of headphones, one in the range of $40 from Amazon.

This is also my go-to music source when it looks like I could get caught in the rain during a run or bike session.

    Happy Swimming,

  • I use the little iPod one from Underwater Audio. Sounds a lot like the one Frank uses. I have never had trouble with the headphones (but I'm not the fastest swimmer and I don't do flip turns!).
