Perform Diuresis

Does Perform make anyone else pee like a race horse?  It seems at every race when I hydrate with race course Perform I can't stop peeing.  I don't have this problem in race rehearsals but I have noticed the race course Perform is more concentrated than when I follow directions with mixing the powder.

  • What do you use in training? It could have something to do with the sodium. It's got about a third the sodium of EFS and Roctane, but more than Heed. Sodium holds water. If the sodium concentration is lower, and less sodium is absorbed, perhaps more is being excreted. Good question for a dietician to weigh in on. It doesn't have caffeine, but the caffeine dieresis is starting to be debunked ( in low doses). OTOH, coffee makes me pee...so maybe not debunked in everyone. But my Roctane doesn't, as far as I can tell...
  • I have heard complaints about the pre mixed perform and I think we've been assured it is the same stuff. Having said that I did pee eight times at IMMT. But I thought that was the cold and maybe over hydration I still am trying to figure that out. I definitely drink more in a RR then a regular wko and even more during a race.
  • I am interested in this discussion also: I peed 4 times in line for the swim at IM LOU, 3 times on the bike (stopped to pee, not "on" the bike), once at T2 and once on the run. I use Infinit plus 1 scoop of perform (more to add the taste than anything else). I also took 1 salt tab per hour on bike and run.  I wondered it too much sodium would cause this or ???? (I calculate I'm taking in roughly 800  mg of sodium per hour on bike - had 2 tabs the night before and 1 in the AM with breakfast).

I have traditionally had to pee at races (nerves probably) but even this was a lot for me. And but for the pee stops I would have moved up 1, maybe 2 places in my age group (I was 7th). During training I drank the same formula and same salt tab regime. At IM LOU on the bike I did drink the water on the course - grabbing one bottle at each aid station and using it to drink and pour over my neck.

I will be researching this and asking my Dr (who does IM races also) but if anyone has already done research on this and can share that would be great too.  My next full distance is Lake Placid 2015, but I'll be doing some 70.3 and Olympics between now and then and can test out new theories.

  • @Leslie, I use Perform mix in training and RRs.
  • I have for last year and this year used the perform mix during training, and it has all functioned normally.

Last year and this year drinking the premixed perform at Lake Placid I could feel it was going through me just as fast as it was going in. And Yes it seemed to be going through me much faster than drinking the powder mix at home when training.
  • My bet is they use lower strength dilution and the sodium is lower than you are used to.
  • Outstanding feedback. This is the power of the collective knowledge and experience of 300+ athletes and I feel vindicated that it's not just me. Thanks.
  • Hmmmm, now that u mention it, I peed a lot at IMFL vs training. I used Infinit/Gatorade blend plus Perform in both training and racing but def. spent more time in porta-potties on race day. I just thought I over hydrated!
  • I use Perform all the time....every ride/run/RR.  I pee'd more times on the IMTX course on race day than usual, despite same intake as RR's and similar temps.  I think some of it is nerves.  No question that being nervous/anxious or cold heightens the urge to void.

Personally/IMHO, I'd much rather pee a few extra times than risk starting the marathon dehydrated at all.  If you can't pee on the bike, you'll sacrifice a few minutes, but if you get dehydrated on the bike, you will sacrifice lots of minutes on the run and have a miserable run.

  • I use perform all the time and I definitely pee more in a race than a race rehearsal. I've always attributed it to all the prehydration I do before the start of a race. I typically down a 32 ounce bottle of Gatorade and probably another 12-16 ounces of some other concoction, typically pickle juice and beet juice, in the 2-3 hours leading up to a race. I pee like made before the start, but I always assumed my frequent peeing on the bike was due to some carry over effect from pre-hydrating combined with a conscious effort to stay super hydrated starting the bike.
  • @ jeff I agree with your comments 100%

@Mark I am interested in your comment about beet juice. Can you tell us about your protocol on the supplement thread over here

  • I was not peeing excessively in IMMT (most all my friends were like you Rob..peeing a LOT on the bike) Just peed twice like usual on the bike. I use perform for all training, but I think we are perpetually a bit dehydrated during training, and topped off very well before races. Plus as Mark stated, very hydrated in the morning of race day. That is my only thought.

It will be interesting to see if Gatorade endurance creates a similar effect...it has slightly more sodium than Perform per serving.

  • Peed even more than normal for mt.

Dave scott, in recent posting, says not to drink more than normal in the days before a race. Different than our protocols.

And i am starting to rethink en thoughts on adding salt if stomache goes sour. Does not make sense to make stomache higher osmolality to get absorbed by blood at lower osmolality.
