pee in shorts

Hey Coach:

HM Race is this Sunday, I lubed up my shorts and I practiced peeing in my shorts this past Saturday (first time I've ever done this) during bike and ran 20' afterwards all is good.  I know it you pee on bike and don't lube u chafe.  My question is do you normally lube up shorts before putting on shorts/wetsuit or do in T1 or T2.  I use a Vaseline/triple antibiotic ointment combo for lube btw.

Thanks in advance, John S.

  • Hi John: I am a new member and just read your note. Is there any trick to pee in shorts on the bike? I know this may sound crazy but I tried a couple times and nothing comes out while on the bike and no problem off the bike. Any tips you have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks much

  • Coach may have better advice than me, I think for me it's just relaxing and getting over the gross factor, realizing I do it in my wetsuit before swimming, therefore, I can do it on the bike. I think it's better to do on downhill or with stronger headwind as it won't run down into your shoe as much. Hope that helps
  • I lube up before the race. Most people will probably tell you its easiest to do on a downhill section so you can coast and lift yourself off the saddle a bit. I have to stop peddling if I want to but I am still not able to fully empty my bladder most of the time. Also, at the next aid station, grab a bottle of water to rinse yourself off and your shoe out a little. ;-)
  • @John: Thanks for the tips .....I will just have to practice, like everything else. Good luck in you race and be safe.

  • John....my name is Jeff, I'm a urologist and I pee on myself in races (standing up in a group accountability group)!

Yes, you can do it.  As mentioned, it's very difficult for most men to void while sitting on your urethra!  Stand up (downhill ideally), pick a leg (usually goes down the leg that is down/peddle down).  Robin Sarner (I think) recommended the left leg, to avoid urine spraying all over your chain/derailleurs.  You can rinse off with water afterwards, but what's the point!....you're already about as gross/sweaty as humanly possible and it's only gonna get worse, so who cares!

Be sure to wash your shoes as soon as possible.  If you leave them in a transition bag in your car for 24-48hrs, you will not be pleased when you open it (personal experience that I'd like to forget).

Some can pee on the run....haven't tried that and not in contention for podium so I just find a port-a-potty.  This is a ninja skill.

  • Not to hijack thread but what do you use to clean out your shoes Jeff
  • There will be a second urologist-triathelete in Austin this year… awesome! I also work with Robin (same multi-group). Thanks for the pee advice. I myself will be a port-a-potty guy until I have respectable times otherwise.

  • Apologies for needing specifics, but where exactly do you apply lube? Around all areas where fluids will flow basically? Just trying to figure out the logisitics of it all. I have wanted to try and had not thought as much about the chafe, mostly was still dealing with the gross factor. I appreciate any help!
  • Chafe will happen most likely whether you pee on yourself or not if you don't use some sort of lubrication. I've used body glide with good results in the past. There is a potential for chafe almost anywhere there is skin on skin, skin on fabric, etc especially after long periods of exercise. I cover nearly everything in my shorts, my underarm areas, and where my HR strap goes.

@Robert - I used Simple Green to clean clean mine out. Spray them down, let it sit for a few, the wash out thoroughly. Place in the sun or on shoe dryer to dry them out.
  • @Jamie It seems that simple green is great for everything. Thanks
  • I lube with chamois cream like any ride and then spray around a bit on all the other bits with TriSlide. I do rinse with water out of habit...only time I don't is when peeing in Jeff's shoes. Hahahjahhahjhaaaaaaaaa. :)

Mac, go pee in the shower in your shorts. Then go pee in the shower at the Y in your swimsuit. Then leave the curtain open as you do the pre-swim rinse, so other folks can see you and try peeing again.

After years of standing up in a crew shell at 7am on the Charles River I lost stage fright early. Soon you'll pee standing right at the bar....
  • Coach P is never allowed to pee in my shoes....ever.

Robert, I just used dishwashing soap (a lot of it).  Simple green would be fine too I guess....I've always thought it was more for "greasy" messes, but it does have a nice scent!  Perhaps both next time!

As far as the lube/chaffing questions, I am fortunate to not have much problem with this.  I didn't use a thing for IMTX and only had one minor chaffing spot, discovered the next day (do not ask where this was!).  Hopefully some "chaffers" will chime in!

  • Thanks Coach......great advice and I plan on practicing the bar part a bunch!!  As a newbie, look forward to you guys helping me reach my goals.

  • To be a bit of a contrarian for a moment....for a half IM, do you really need to pee if you take care of that before the race? I've done 8 or 9 HIM and never peed in any of them except one where I had terrible GI issues and needed a portapotty for more than just peeing.....

Maybe, maybe not. But I beat my best friend at WF one year because I learned to piss myself while running 7:15's without dropping pace

  • take imodium before your race and pee in transition or on the run, (it is VERY hard to clean your bike shoes) ....then throw water on yourself at water stops unless it is really cold out there, and look at the other folks like they are the ones that are stinky. Use LOTS of nappy cream like Desitin on your butt, because you do not want a diaper rash!

then, if you have to, wear your shoes on the plane because, and this is important, you just don't want to pack them in your suitcase after that. and who cares if your shoes are stinky on the plane.... Promise no one will notice image

    cheers!
  • by the way, if you don't pee while riding, you will ride a lot faster as it hurts like crazy to hold that much urine in your bladder for 6 hours!. Peeing in your wetsuit for a cold swim is necessary.
  • William if you are fast for you and no nutrition issues (5% of HIM athletes) then not an issue. Most fade long before their fitness fails due to poor hydration and fueling. :)
  • I officially stand down on the no pee-ing thing. :-)
  • that was all a bit TMI!
