Peter's Buffalo Stampede 10 miler race report
10 mile race
1:02:36
6:16 pace
3rd place M30-39, 11th overall
I did this race as the test for finishing up 8 weeks on the get faster plan. My vdot going into the race was 56 and was tested in a 5k. My goal for this race was to at least validate that vdot but with the longer 10 mile distance. My watch recorded 10.1 miles and if I take the 10 mile portion I met the goal. Going by the official finish my vdot is still 55 so I am feeling pretty good heading into marathon training. I also podiumed for the first time! 3rd in 30-39!
This race is also special because yesterday I told my parents that I have tattoos and they finally got to see me race. As it turns out they suspected all along and it was no big deal. They were very proud of me!
Like any other race tons of people shot out way too fast but I held back and ran a 6:17 for the first mile. A group of 3 guys from the local running club seemed to be running at my exact target pace so I just stuck with them. The next few miles were 6:12 and then we settled into the low 6's. At some point the lead females caught us and the 6 of stuck together pretty much until the end. Mile 6 was slightly uphill and we did a 6:02 and I think that hurt me a bit. I didn't have any kick at the end. Also, we were followed by cyclists the whole time because they were trailing the ladies. They were chit chatting the whole time which was a bit annoying. In the end I finished toward the back of the clump of us but I didn't care, none were in my age group and I was happy with my effort. I didn't feel like flooring it at the end.
I talked to the ladies after the race and learned that they raced at marathon pace vs me in Z4! This was just a fun practice run for the CIM! Holy crap they are strong!
I am very happy with this race. I finally made it to the podium. I have come in 4th so many times! The race was also very well put on and it had a great community atmosphere. I also got to meet fellow ENer Jennifer Datwyler. Woohoo!

Peter: "I held back and ran a 6:17 for the first mile."
Mike: "I sprinted all out and ran a 6:17 for the first mile, losing consciousness soon thereafter."
Third is cool. Yeah, fourth sucks; 2nd is worse, though. I bet you'll be learning that soon… on your way to #1.
