Camp Weekend lessons learned/observations
Friday 114/6 brick- First, it takes forever to prep 4 bottles and 4 Honey Stinger waffles and then 4/4 more baggies of each for half way.
But I learned that it is worth it to have my own stuff and I will haul my all my bottles on the bike and then have more in my SN bags.
The extra 5 min will be worth it. I’m not fast enough for that to matter. Second, Salt Stick Caps do not dissolve in liquid.
And what little bit does dissolve makes my beloved Roctane taste terrible. For 114 miles. My new strategy of 6 swallows of Roctane
and 1/4 waffle every 15 minutes worked great. I was never hungry and my fluid status was perfect. Pre- and post-ride weights were the
same. I prob could have done a bit less because I was peeing every hour the first three hours. Also, training partners are invaluable!
I do most of my long rides alone, but a friend told me I would want her on the last 50 and she was so right! The run was easier than I
thought. The run of a 60/5 brick a few weeks ago was very hard- this was great! And...there is NO CHANCE that I will go out too fast
on the run in the race. I felt good, but wasn’t really sure how I would add another 20 miles. Also- ensure ALL electronics are fully
charged. Had to do the run by feel.
Saturday 108 ride- Legs felt great. Sit bones- no so much! Learned again to ensure ALL ELECTRONICS are charged! When my Di2
died and bike was in the smallest gear possible, and I could get up to 12.4mph if I pedaled furiously, I had to call the hubs to bring me
my road bike. I forgot how comfortable she is!! Except the saddle. There will be an Adamo Prologue for sale soon. The Adamo Road
on my tri bike is great. The Prologue...not so much. And my friend came with me on the last 30 miles...that was great. Training plan
says this is the day the magic happens. I don’t know if it was magic, but it was good. Even went to a party that night.
Sunday 12 mile run- I did NOT want to go. I was tired. I was sore. I wanted to rest today and run tomorrow. Hubs (who doesn’t
exercise on purpose) said, “Isn’t being tired and running anyway the point?” I didn’t punch him in the throat (since he was so awesome
with the rescue bike yesterday), but I laced up and went. Waaaay better than expected. Pacing was perfect. Tried my Sketcher Go
Runs for their first long run and I think I will wear them for the race. They require socks, but at my pace, the extra 45 seconds will not
be a big deal.I could have gone 15 today. It was that good.
This weekend gave me a huge confidence booster. I have not gotten faster this season as I had hoped, but my endurance is there. I
KNOW I will finish my first IM. Thanks for the advice and thanks for being there, team!
