Training motivation while injured

I fell and separated my AC joint right before July 4th.  Once it became clear surgery was likely necessary, I decided to go with my preferred but geographically less desirable orthopedic surgeon.  Surgery is now probably 6-10 weeks off, since I doubt they think outseason is a valid reason to expedite a surgical date.  Coach R set me up with a training plan, but I'm finding it hard to be motivated when there's always some level of discomfort, I am very limited in terms of training activities, and I feel like I'm in limbo.  Any suggestions?  Just suck it up/follow the plan?  Thanks.

  • Kerrie,

I think it depends on where you are in your season. Are you finished racing and are concerned about getting out of shape on the out season? Or do you have a race coming up that you are still training for?
If you are finished and your surgeon doesn't care if you continue to do damage because he is just going to fix it, then do what feels right. Rehab in the out season will put you with the rest of the triathletes in the country, as opposed to the awesome leg up we have!)
If you still have racing to do, and your surgeon doesn't care if do more damage because he is going to fix it, then suck it up.
Is there PT you could be doing now to accelerate your post op rehab? We do this for ACLs, but not sure if there is such a thing for ACs.
And one last thought...if he is your preferred surgeon, and you are done racing, perhaps he would see fit to move your surgery to ASAP if he understood your situation. If he understands athletes, he might be flexible. ACs are relatively simple. Esp if you PROMISE to be a model patient.
