Recovery drink/ Endurox R4 vs Ihealth nutri

I am looking for a recovery drink and a Pre breakfast drink for 2 A.M.  I was using to  Muscle Milk for both.

I
found the Ihealth (product of Canada) at a local store here in Michigan and
they claim it is one of the best recovery drink..

My question is: what are the most important ingredients in a
recovery drink?

I was told glutamine was important and I try and stay away from
sugar.

The largest difference between Endurox R4 (2 scoops) and ihealth
(2 scoops):

 The Endurox R4 has 40 g
of sugar, includes l-glutamine, protein 13g, total carbs 52 and has a few more
vitamins.

The ihealthnutri has 2 g of sugar, no l-glutamine, protein  52g,
total carbs 6g and has different vitamins.

thanks!

  • I like Endurox but I love the Ultragen Cappucino flavor. JW loves the orange creamsicle. I personally am not afraid of "sugar" in a recovery drink because that is one of things you need. I don't like the artificial sweetners as many of these can have GI side effects. I think finding one drink for both maybe hard. My main point is recovery you need glutamine but most important is you gotta love the taste so you drink it.
  • Thanks Robert,

    How much glutamine is enough?

  • I'm with Robert. I really like the Cappuccino flavored 1st Endurance Ultragen.

A cheaper alternative would be milk + protein powder + glutamine supplement.
  • I believe the biggest thing to look for in a recovery drink is a 4:1 carb to protein ratio. Now those carbs don't need to come from sugar, they can be other carb sources. So if your going to use the ihealth, then you'll need to find a carb combination to take with this.
  • I'm in the Ultragen orange creamsicle camp.  I actually look forward to it at the end of a long bike ride or race.

  • How long does the workout have to be to use the recovery drink?
If it's a 60 minute swim (like typical Monday or Friday on HIM plan), I would think it's not necessary.
After the long run and long bike, absolutely.

But what about those 60 min bike interval days? or 45 min temp run workouts?

I try to look at it as something that is always beneficial after a workout.  However, I also look at how many calories I burned during the workout and adjust the calories accordingly.  When I do use a Endurox or something like that, I'll sometimes use the recommended 2 scoops or I'll only do a single scoop--depends on how much "work" I did.
