What do I do with my wetsuit in T1?
re-post from the dahsboard.
Catherine JadotSo my first IM is next weekend... start to get nervous... After the swim, in T1, in which bag am i supposed to put my wetsuit? The T1 bag? So I should empty everything that's in it first and then take care of the wetsuit? (trying to visualize T1) Thx

Steve Swanlund Yup' grab your bag from the rows, run to the tent, dump your bag and put on what you have packed, when you have what you want for the bike, put everything that you have either shed or don't need on the bike into the bag, sinch it up and hand it to a volunteer.

Thanks for posting. My point was that before every Ironman we always see questions about gear bags, what goes where, how transitions work, etc. My intent was that we could park these questions and answers in one place for everyone to reference.
So...does anyone have any other questions about the logistics of Ironman events?
The way my race last weekend went, though, was that I ended up dismounting wearing my shoes. (I didn't take them off in time before riding up the helix at Wisconsin.) That said, it was totally no big deal. They got stuck in my run gear bag by a volunteer, just like the wetsuit gets stuck into the bike gear bag.
It's one of the great ways to speed up your transition to let the volunteers put stuff into the bags for you. In my experience, they are very excited and willing to help.
Related to transitions, bags, etc, is something I saw/heard of twice at IMWI: athletes putting a Starbucks card in their T1 and T2 bags and handing it to the volunteers who are helping them in the tent. I thought that was a very good, cool idea.
Just to back this up a little. Know where you transition bag is racked. Walk through the transition from where you will be coming out of the water know the exact rack and walk through to the change tent. Don't count on it but a volunteer may have your bag as you come from the swim.
Depending upon when you come out of the water you may have lots or very little space in the change tent. Again find a spot and this might or might not include a chair, put your goggles, swim cap and wetsuit in a pile and dump out contents of t1 bag and start your process for the bike. When completed I've always had a volunteer say go I will put your swim stuff in your t1 bag, again this may or may not happen depending on your swim time.
Don't stress about this too much you will be able to see the whole transition set up when you drop your bags and bike off.

Love the idea of putting a gift card in the T1 and T2 bag. That is great Karma. I might just have to do that.
