What's your gearing?

Hi guys,
just wondering what gearing everyone is running at IMSG. I am currently running compact with 11-26. I know everone is saying you can't go wrong with more gears, but the knowledgeable Tom Glen told me that by adding a 27 I would gain something like 4 rpm if I was going 9 mph or something like that. which doesnt' seem like a lot. I am trying to decide if I should get 12-27, 12-28 or just deal with the 11-26 that I have. Anywho, can't wait to meet everyone in just over 2 weeks (crazy, I know).

  • I am going with the 27/12-and I too have the compact gearing. I did hill repeats last week and was glad to have the extra rpms-see you soon

  • I think you'll be fine, but you could read rich's blog post on the course (search function in sidebar of blog).
  • I would probably go 12-28 if I were racing, just because you're never going to see the 50-11 combo (you'll be coasting) and having the 28 vs a 26 would be helpful. The Veyo Wall is legit steep for about a mile. Many will be doing the Paper Boy to get up it. I plan to bring a stack of 28-12's, my tools, and sell gear changes for $1000 per in the middle of the hill

  • Not to hijack the thread, but I am looking to switch from a 11-26 to 12-28 for the American Zofingen course. I am running SRAM Red components and can't seem to find a 12-28 cassette. Is 11-28 the best I can do?

  • compact 11-28 for me
  • Changed over to 12-27 for this one...and put on a new chain.
  • 11-28 just in case :-) with Compact

SRAM and Shimano are interchangable. I'm running a SRAM Red 26-11 on Shimano DA drive train.

  • Sorry for if jumping in here, I'm looking to adjust my gearing as well for IMLP.

For anyone looking for a 12-28, I checked the SRAM and Shimano websites - it looks like 12-28 is not a current option in the "mid-level" cassettes.

    SRAM offers : 11-26, 12-26, 12-27 and 11-28 in PG 1070 (Rival & Force)

    Shimano offers: 11-25, 12-25 and 11-28 in CS-6700 (Ultegra)

    I've got a 50/34 with a 11-26 now, but I may switch to 12-27 or 11-28.

    Hope this helps.
  • I just bought, and have been testing. a 28-11 with my compacts. Like it a lot and plan on using this setup for IMSG.

  • I'm running a standard up front with a 11-28 on the rear with my racing set up.
  • Thanks for all the comments guys, I switched to an 11-28 (since no one is offering 12-28 anymore) from 11-26.
Hopefully that will save my legs for some decent running in a week!
