Savannah river closed to swimmers

I saw a news link that the Savannah River on Augusta has some oil spill in it that had been traced back to near the boathouse and it is closed to swimmers until the problem can be figured out!!!

Bad news! If the swim is canceled then it becomes a duathlon right?!?!

Since I have to walk the run anyway, I am super bummed about having to do more "running".

Has anyone experienced this before??

  • That is DOWNSTREAM from the race - the water is clean at the race venue. All the factories and other pollution is not going to affect us.
  • There was also this report:

    SAVANNAH RIVER SWIM ADVISORY UPDATE
Yesterday a swimmer noticed an oily residue on the surface of the Savannah River. The local area received substantial rainfall, causing storm drains to naturally flush out. Unfortunately, when products are illegally dumped into the drains they are flushed into the River along with the storm water. We believe the residue is a combination of runoff and illegally dumped product from these storm drains. Extensive sampling was done and results will be in and released shortly.
We expect to lift the No Swim Advisory on Tuesday, September 16. This advisory is strictly precautionary to ensure the utmost water safety. SRK will keep you all updated as more information becomes known. Please share and thanks!
  • Augusta, GA Fire Department
The "Do Not Swim" order implemented by the Augusta Fire Department and the Augusta Richmond County EMA has been LIFTED. It is now safe to swim in the Savannah River. Tests show the water is safe and the substance seen over the weekend has gone away.
