Powertap hub life

I bought a used powertap G3 a couple of years ago. I have no idea how many miles it had on it when I bought it but I've put about 7200 miles on them. Lately I've noticed that it's been throwing out some weird numbers occasionally when I'm riding. While I was doing the Vineman there were a lot of zeros when I was pedaling. I thought it was the batteries (even though I changed them right before the race) so I changed them again with fresh ones I just bought (I'm not sure how long the other "new" ones were sitting in my drawer). Lately I haven't been seeing zeros but the power numbers go from a realistic number in the hundred to three hundred range to single or low double digits even when my perceived exertion isn't changing.

So my question is do the powertap hubs wear out from a power measuring aspect?

  • Id contact support and see what they say. I had similar problems on my new PT g3, went through several sets of batteries, they sent me a new sensor unit for the hub ( part that comes off) before it all started working right. You could also try a firmware update.
  • They do wear out.  I have burned through two of them, one every 3 years.  The good news is that saris will replace the guts with a brand new G3 if you call them and send in the old unit for ~$300......
  • our old pro+.    no problems.

our new g3.     problems.     replacing the switch out unit solved.    If not covered, only about $100.

as stated below, update the firmware.
