Hi IM Chattanooga participants!

I am one of the IM Lake Tahoe participants  last weekend that would like to take a spot in IM Chattanooga tomorrow morning as soon as registration opens for us.

This will be my first IM. and am trying to quickly arrange all the logistics and understand the key elements of this race. I am watching Rich´s webinar  and reading the Participant´s Guide.

One key question I have is regarding water temperature as I only have at this point a full wetsuit. Will a full wetsuit be legal on this race?Any other key consideration not mentioned in the webinar and in the Participants Guide?

I am looking for accommodation for my family (4 of us) as well.

Hope to see you all this weekend

  • Hi Victor!

Per the athletes guide (page 11), if water is less than 76.2 degrees it's "wetsuit legal". Above 76.2 degrees you can choose to wear a wetsuit, but you will in ineligible for a podium or Kona spot. No one can wear a wetsuit, they are prohibited, in water above 83.8 degrees.

    Hope to see you there.

Thank you for your response. My question then would be: Do you the temp forecast (aprox) of the swim? because I have no idea.
    Thanks
    Victor
  • Joe Matchette just posted about an extra room - please see his post here: http://members.endurancenation.us/Forums/tabid/57/aft/16822/Default.aspx
  • @Victor- I believe water temps are on the border of not being wetsuit legal. With that said, there has been some rain in choo and the over night temps for the next couple of days are forecast to be in the low 50s. That can change the water temp fairly quick. I would prepare for both situations.
  • Wetsuits wil be a game time decision. Air emps are forecast to climbinto the 80s later this week but lows are still close to 60. Aso depends on how much flow TVA lets go prior to race morning. Be prepared for both possibilities.
  • To be clear, "wetsuit legal" means a couple things:

Wetsuits not legal, for awards: if the water temp is above Xf, if you choose to wear a wetsuit you are not eligible for awards (ie podium) or Kona slot.

Wetsuits not legal, period: if the water temp is above Yf, no one can wear a wetsuit, they are not allowed at all.

Someone smarter than me please tell us what my X and Y are above.

Now, the reality is that many, many athletes in the race view their wetsuit as a safety device, race day woobie. And so Ironman almost always finds the deepest, darkest hole in the water from which to take their temperature readings. So bring your wetsuit, be prepared to use it, but things have to get very, very warm for them to not be allowed at all (at Yf above).

  • Wetsuits may be worn in water temperatures up to and including 24.5 degrees C/76.1 degrees f.
Athletes who choose to wear a wetsuit in water temperatures between 24.5 degrees C/76.2 degrees f and 28.8 degrees C/ 83.8 degrees f will not be eligible for Age group awards, including IRONMAN World Championship 70.3 slots or Rolldown slots.
Prohibited Wetsuit: De soto Water Rover
Wetsuits cannot measure more than 5mm thick.
Wetsuits will be prohibited in water temperatures greater than 28.8 degrees C/ 83.8 degrees f.
  • Thank you for your comments. I am confirmed in IMCHOO. I am looking forward to seeing you at the "4 Keys Talk", meet Rich, Patrick and the EN Team.
  • @Victor make sure to sign up for the 4Keys talk! And maybe post it on the Lake Tahoe group board on Facebook for anyone who got in with you BOTH coaches will be there so its going to be an amazing 4keys
  • According to Facebook, current water temps are close to 80 degrees, but many "experts" there say that the WTC ALWAYS manages to find a cold spot to take the temp and make wetsuits "legal".
