Run durability training plan

Hi Patrick, Coach rich is setting up my 2015 TSR and i mentioned an issue I have with my running, he suggested I contact you regarding "run durability training plan".  I run a 5k at 7:30 min miles but can't seem to run a IM marathon at 10 min miles which is what my zones suggest i should be able to do.  I know I'm not over cooked on the bike, when i get off i feel great but when i run AT WHATEVER PACE, I always seem to be gasping for air. I am a 1:05 - 1:10 swimmer, between 5:35-5:55 bike (depends), but can't seem to get this run down faster than 4:50.  Mentally & physically I believe I have the potential for an overall time of 11 - 11:30.  I've been with EN since Oct 2010.  how should I tackle this?

Thanks for the input Patrick,

Joe

  • You can find the run durability plan in the training plan drop downs, and you can start with the first block whenever you're ready. That said, I'd like to know more about this heart rate breathing thing. Do you have any specific files you can share her images you can show me that indicate this phenomenon? Are you saying that you feel the same way in a 5K test as when doing a long run?
  • patrick I do not have files to share with you regarding my runs. a 5k test and other runs are different.  at the end of 5k test i'm ready to drop of course.(7.5 minute miles). During any of my normal pace runs my breathing is always heavy, like i just can't get enough oxygen.  for example my 5 mile run the other day, it's hard to breath comfortably doing 9.5 minute miles.  i didn't do any interval work and I'm still breathing hard at the end of my run (not 5k breathing hard). i guess it's hard to explain.  I don't wear a HR strap any more because it rubs my chest raw.  maybe I'm just someone who is not built for running or needs to accept the pain involved every time? i don't think my HR is ever below 150 on ANY run....5k tests are 170+. if i can't get this run thing down my times won't improve unless i hammer the bike.  i'll still do a 5 hr marathon.   I'm not sure, I don't think you can help me on this one.  Rich suggested I reach out.

    thanks, Joe

  • I have issues with rubbing so I use lotion under heart rate belt. (usually just vaseline intensive care which is cheap and easy and conducts heart beat well) I hope that helps!...
  • Joe – I'm a little worried about shortness of breath at any pace, whether it's fast or slow. That doesn't sound like a fitness issue it sounds like maybe there's a restricted airway or perhaps some exercise-induced asthma? This is something you ever brought up to your primary care?

As an example, my run tests are in the low 170s but my easy runs are below 130, I have a 40 beat range. The fact that you only have a 20 beat gap between your easiest run in your heart is strong is a little surreal. I'll be curious to know if anyone else on the team has a similar experience with running. Please let me know about your doctor.
  • It may be of value to get a cardiopulmonary stress test looking at your PFT's with a 12 lead EKG and VO2 max to determine if issue is pulmonary versus cardiac.... check and see if breathing is issue on bike, try difference with running inside. improved fitness should be associated with an improved range with a quicker return to normal following exercise. heat and humidity are big factors

I know that running will bump your HR much higher than cycling in most cases and Shortness of Breath may not be noted on bike like it is on the run. (my max on run is 185 my max on bike is 167, resting HR is 50, threshold is 140)

    sorry for butting in again!
We do cardiopulmonary stress tests in our office and this is available through most cardiologist office. things like pulmonary hypertension can cause shortness of breath without obvious pulmonary pathology. agree with coach on maybe seeing a doctor

consider HR and power matching to see if you have discordance on those two measures which helps to determine aerobic fitness
  • thanks! hope this is helpful image
