George's 2014 IMMT Race Report
2014 IMMD Race Report
Given the flat course and nearly identical climate of Cambridge, MD to Elizabeth City, NC I had hoped to have a sub 12 hour race but the black cloud looming over my race rehearsals and IMMT followed me to IMMD. Mechanical problems and my still to be discovered ideal nutrition plan would leave my best race for another day.
Swim: (1:11) Water temp was 72 deg. This was a bit slow for me, I’m usually in the 1:07. Left calf cramp for a few minutes during the the 1st lap, then right calf cramp on the 2nd lap. As I detected the cramps coming on I just slowed, stopped kicking, and then the cramp went away. I did not know my swim time during the race because I must have hit the wrong button on the Garmin which did not record the segment. I was therefore not stressing about my swim time. Beside, 4 minutes is not a big deal.
T1: (????) Garmin gaff
Bike: (6:28:19) 3 flat tires, 1 on the front and 2 on the back. The back flat tires were the most interesting to me. On the first repair I found a 1 inch transverse cut in the tire. The support vehicle was nowhere to be found so I patched the inside of the tire with 3 green tube patches which worked for about 2 miles then blew again. I then put the last 3 patches over that which held for another 10 miles or so. I made it to Special Needs and had extra tubes but no tire. I had left word at the Special Needs station that I needed a tire. They contacted the support vehicle which found me on the side of the road. Support provided a fresh tire and pump which got me going again. At home my Joule GPS would not sync so I have sent it back to Saris Cycle Group for warranty service and hopefully recovery of the data. Garmin missed the first 10 miles of the ride. I'll add the bike numbers if Saris can recover the ride data.
T2: (????) Garmin and Joule GPS gaff
Run: (4:39:32) This run was going along as planned until mile 11 when my gut rejected any further effort to exceed an airborne shuffle. Despite tums, Perform, ice chips, pretzels and water sips the best I could muster on this run was to finish standing up.

Sorry to hear of your mechanicals. That sucks big time. I am impressed that you stuck with it, and finished the job despite additional gut challenges on the run. Hopefully, these misfortunes will serve to strengthen your resolve on your next IM, and serve as an experience reservoir from which you can draw.
