Race Plan for 2015, is IMTX too soon?

Hi all, looking for some advice and feedback on what to do in 2015.

Quick Backstory:

EN since 2011, consistent training loads since then, a couple <3:0X:XX marathons in that time too, but I'm done with open marathons now that I've progressed enough on the bike that I don't want to lose those gains.</p>

I weight 155-160lbs with an FTP of 280W and a vDOT of 53ish

This last weekend I completed IMCHOO (first IM) in 11:16 and now considering what else I want to do. I'd be lying if I didn't say I wantto go to Kona, but I am realistic and just want to take several years and see what the journey is (not looking for a get rich quick scheme).

I'm in Indianapolis and realistically won't be riding outside January - March.

I'd like to do at least 1 IM next year, maybe 2. Not interested in compromising my builds just to do another IM though. Is IMTX too soon to do another IM? I'd like to think I'd have time to improve physically AND improve my execution by May, but I'd probably only have 6 weeks of outside riding. I'd have camps + a week or 2 of vacation before IMTX in warmer weather though as well.

IMBoulder and IMLou later in the year are appealing to me as well.

If you guys think IMTX is too soon I'd probably just do a couple HIM's and then prep for a fall IM.

  • 7.5 months between IM's is an eternity.
  • I think the biggest consideration is the outside riding. Its definitely doable, but you would need to start Outseason in Nov, December at the latest. Then Ironman build would begin in late February and by that point you need to be all in on those weekend workouts. If you can't get outside in March it could be tough unless you are game for long trainer workouts (which suck) until you can get outside.

If travel is no issue why not Coeur d’Alene ? Its in June almost a month an a half later than Texas and you should be able to get in a longer period of outside riding.
  • as Bob said.

I like the early season.      But I do most bike training indoors on the Kickr.

Texas can always use more Robins.   image

  • I'm saving Texas for 2017 when it's in April!
  • Plenty of time to train for Texas. You just need to decide for yourself how you like long trainer rides. I've done Texas 3 times, live in Oregon and did almost all of my training on my computrainer. Not everyone can suffer on the trainer for that long though.
  • Thanks for all the feedback everyone, I've decided to go for IMTX, Muncie, and IMLou. See you all out there!
