groin/inner thigh inflammation and pain on bike

I just did Augusta 70.3 and I am 4 weeks from IMFL.  On the Augusta bike I had to stretch my inner thighs often starting at mile 30.  After my race, my inner thigh muscles were swollen.  I have not experienced this on my training rides.  I am guessing weak muscles, so I have started strengthening my legs and plan to add it in until IMFL.  Any other suggestions?  Does kinesio tape help?

Thanks for any help.

  • Were you in aero more/less than usual? Same saddle?
  • Hi!

I did not have aero bars on my bike (I have a road bike) and I did use the same saddle I have been using.

  • My guesses would be either your saddle is too wide and rubbing on your adductors or too high, causing you to rock back and forth. Normal cycling should put very little stress on the adductors. Strange though that you didn't have this with training rides. I'd recommend getting a bike fit.
  • Thanks. I have had a bike fit for this bike, but I think the saddle issue sounds like it could be the culprit.  I will go back to my fit guy and maybe he could make a suggested saddle change.
  • How is your core strength?  IMO a lot of hip girdle problems can be traced back to weak core muscles i.e. deep abdominals and glutes.

  • Hi!  Thanks for the advice.  I have started a strength routine two to three times a week for just about every body part.  I am hoping four weeks will have given me enough time to at least help a little.
