He did not mark him for reason. Good out as to why he lost it rather than the alternative of just not being able to keep up with him, which is what would have happened anyway. So maybe a good pro after all, hiding the inevitible.
Yes, Cancellera on the flats (and, apparently, on the cobbles as well), like Contador on the sharp mountains, can ride away from any individual or group (even the whole peloton) anytime he wants, and probably sustain it for up to an hour.
Still, if you watch it, you can see what's coming. Boonen starts to eat, drops to the back and to the right of the peleton, Cancellara is paying attention to the peleton at the same times and moves to the left and forward...maybe he looked back and saw that Boonen wasn't paying attention and decided to make a break.
Figure he has to know that if he gets clear and leaves Boonen, no one in the peleton is going to help Boonen get back to him. Why would they, as Boonen will beat any of them in the final sprint. No incentive for them to chase Cancellara's attack. So even though it's Cancellara breaking away from the main group and being chased by the peleton, it's really still only Cancellara vs Boonen.
Tomeka basically needs to staple himself to the ass of Spartacus, drink when he drinks, etc.
He's literally a stud. I watched it on VS and it was hard to believe. I also have him in a "Fight Club" video from thesufferfest.com that I ride to indoors and he is the last one you ride with in a 4 minute TT and it is really sick how fast he goes, and how many people he goes by like they are standing still. His nick name really fits.
Loved it! loved "we have a problem"! smile. don't you know when he finally hit that smooth road off of that dusty pebbly thing.. that he could breathe some relief! m
Not sure attacking when your main rival is eating is the 'done thing' - they had also been thru a feed station not long before. Lots of talk about doping as well, especially as he rode away from someone on his wheel - its not as though his long-term DS is an advocate of racing clean is it? Saying all that, the Boonen 'social drug use' seems to indicate something else - 'belgian hot-pot' perhaps......... So, perhaps its a level playing field, shame though.
All the boys on the local racing team say Spartacus is doping. It's the highest form of flattery- unless of course it's true. Would have been great to see Party Boy on his wheel, just the two of them for 50k.
It's the tactics here that really impress me. It's one thing to be strong, it's another to know when to attack and how to ensure your rival won't be able to chase. Although I admit to being a little disapointed about the team car radio dealio- thanks for pointing out the man behind the curtain Dan, that bummed me out a little!
that was riveting, I loved the commentary and behind the scenes. unloading my dryer while watching this! more! I loved the positive encouragement from the coach though, wow. totally inspired me as we work with our EN teammates out on the course! lots of it goes a long way. m

In any language- it means the same!!
I can't believe Boonen didn't mark Cancellara better; these guys are pros, right?

PS- can I get Patrick to just whisper "don't panic, don't panic" in my earphone for the swim at IMoo?

F***, Dan. Even knowing how that ends, it was riveting. GH's career at that race is absolutely gut-wrenching.
