Pace zones on hills

Should I adjust my pace zones on a hilly course?

Is it a good idea to have one hard group ride per week in the out season?

If there is educational podcast or articles about these questions already on the site, please guide me to them.

  • RV -- yes, when you start running the hill you transition from looking at the pace is a number under watch to a feeling in your legs. So the effort that feels like an eight minute mile on the flat will probably be in 820 or perhaps at 8:30 on a hill. But on the downhill side, that same effort will be a 740 or even a 735. You are essentially flattening that hill.

I don't want you to run up the hill as hard as you can -- ever. The cost is simply too high.

Yes you are welcome to replace one of the regularly scheduled interval rides with a hard bride. If your group ride is on any day other than Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday feel free to let me know and we'll try to adjust the schedule here.
