The 2015 "Heads We Win / Tails You Lose, Post Your Test Results" Thread

The NovOS'15 is about to begin. One of our longest, most fun, and lucrative (for the coaches) tradition is the Heads We Win, Tails You Lose Bet. Here's how it works:

The Heads We Win, Tails You Lose Spreadsheet

  • Sign in and enter your information in the Base Data Table sheet of the spreadsheet
  • When you complete your tests this week, come back and enter your testing results in the spreadsheet AND post them to this thread so we can all see where everyone is starting from, jumpstart the accountability and team cammaraderie mojo
  • RnP will look at your results and set end of the OS goals for you, The Bet.

*Edit: when posting your results to this thread, please include age, weight, and w/kg, if you are riding with power. Thanks, just helps everyone get a picture of everyone else.

How the Bet Works -- it's very simple:

  • Meet or beat the goal we give you by the end of season? You buy us coffee, putting $5-10,000 on each of our Starbucks cards, entered on Sheet 1 of the spreadsheet, for your convenience.
  • Fail to meet your goal? You buy us coffee.

See? Very simple!

Thanks and don't forget to:

  1. Sign in on the spreadsheet
  2. After you test this week, enter your results on the spreadsheet AND in this thread as a post below.

It looks like the link here is correct.
  • Meet or beat the goal we give you by the end of season? You buy us coffee,
Fail to meet your goal? You buy us coffee.

    How exactly do I win?

See the name of this thread

  • Ok now I'm embarrassed I didn't pick that up.

Ok now I'm embarrassed I didn't pick that up.

The thread is inspired by an afternoon I spent with one of my uncles when I was 10. We played "heads I win, tails you lose," where the winner got to punch the loser in the arm. I got punched a lot before I figured it out...

  • I maybe a little early, but am eager so here are me numbers. Body comp=2.48, VDOT=41, and FTP=228. I have been in unstructured workout mode since Sep 15 and took some time off to visit Philly. Really nice town by the way. So eager to get back on the train.
  • Looks like I am not the only early one here. I tested last week so I would be ready to go this week and low and behold, week 1 is testing...
    VDOT = 50
    FTP = 287
  • I tested on the bike but I'm not going to do the run test for a while since I'm almost 100% back from an Achilles injury and don't want to re-injure it. So my initial run test will be in 4 weeks or so.
  • I'm a bit of a bike and triathlon newb.  I did my FTP test today and was surprised (maybe ignorantly) that my FTP has dropped from ~250 when I did IMMT 2013.  this was my first IM and third triathlon.  I signed up for IMMT 2014, did a couple months of OS and then due to health issues had to bail from the entire season.  I pretty much haven't been on my bike since January of this year.  I'm feeling better so I signed up for IMMT 2015 and hopped back on the bike.  My FTP today was a disappointing 144!  I didn't expect to see 250 but kinda expected to be in the +/-200 range.  I havent done my run test yet as I'm trying to ease back in but intend to do that later this week.  I'll post then.

    Any feedback on this???? Thanks!

  • @craig- 10 months is a long time without training, but really, it's probably longer since it sounds like you had just started the OS last January dropping out. That being said, if you had an FTP of 250 2 years ago when you raced an IM, that tells me that provided that you are now healthy, you should be able to get back there. From where you are now, I'm betting you see some massive initial gains! Welcome back and I look forward to seeing you put up some great numbers over the next couple of months!
  • Happy to have tests done.  Ready to place my bets.

    Age 41

    FTP 217   watts/kg 2.3

Nowhere to go but up. Let's roll.

  • I'm game!

    Age 54, Wt 132 (blech...)

    Bike test: VO2 177 watts, FTP 130 watts  , Avg HR 148,  w/kg = 2.2

5K Run test: 24:37, vDOT = 39, Avg HR 169 (hmmm... that's quite a bit higher than bike FTP avg hr - guess that means I just can't push myself as hard on the bike, yet... I almost passed out at the end!)  But, there were a few intervals during the 20' when I really slowed down.

  • Well, I don't seem to be able to enter info on the spreadsheet, but I'll work on that.

I'm in and here's my date for this week:

    Age 44, Wt 127.3

  • I'm in - data entered on worksheet - hoping for some big gains.
  • @Brad Thanks for the encouraging feedback! I felt much better after reading that...

I did my Vdot test today and looked down near the end of the test and I was running at max HR.  Thats never happpened.  I hope its just because I'm not in my previous shape after being out for 10 months other than some sporadic running.

Vdot 42 Run time 23mins AVG HR 170

  • Did the tests this week. Been working out very sporadic since IMWI. Slow and steady for me, with the key word being SLOW.

Age 48, VDOT 27, FTP 191, Weight 219, Setting PR at Town Run Trail two weeks ago.... priceless.

    Looking forward to NOS.
  • Hello,

    Wk. 8 data: FTP - 282; 5k run - 27:53; vDot - 33; weight - 247

I already beat Rich's FTP goal for the OS and have one vDot point to go to meet Patrick's vDot goal. This whole outseason thing is going pretty well this year!
  • So far I am winning on running, but have got to make some big gains in the next 7 weeks on the bike.

  • @John, huge improvements in all three categories. Looking forward to hearing the totals for all 14 weeks!
  • Week 8results - not a winner yet

    Week 1: Age 56, 5'10" @ 161 lb
