IMAZ RR2 plan - FTF
Issues from RR1 were:
1) Nutrition – forgot to eat in light of issues 2-4
2) Power numbers seemed very off
3) Bluntly put, pain in the crotch staying aero without stopping
4) Venue – very high winds (since then found wind forecast website)
Venue: Had to make a quick change in plans – checked wind forecast for Sat – high winds (18MPH by 11 AM). Steady winds all day on Sunday. Had these high winds for RR1 and don’t feel the need to repeat! Can’t do Friday so moving RR1 to tomorrow so I can focus on things besides not getting blown over. This is really the only place I can ride continuously which is what I need to practice. If I’m stopping at lights etc, issues 1 and 3 are not a problem. Realize not much time for input but some helpful input from RR1 went into this (thanks). Will be doing 4 mile loops around an island.
Nutrition – going to go with ~1.5 bottles of perform (24 oz) an hour with salt stick every 30 min. Supplement with powerbar cut into 1/8 bites. I have not used the GU gels but I’m going to try those as well since that is on the course and I might need them in an “ I just dropped all my powerbar bites” emergency. Setting alarm on garmin for 30 min for 1 salt stick and 1 powerbar bite. Aid station set-up in back of minivan across from porta potty. Set-up for minimum rest time.
Power – only my 3rd test, but I did this one outside. Power numbers were much higher outside and consistent with my estimates from RR1 so I can go in with more confidence. Still pretty low but ride time predicted at 6.5 hrs rather than 7.5. Will ride at the new power numbers. I’ll be going at 0.67-0.7 the entire race. Garmin is on aerobar where I can easily see it. I think I have figured out the issues I was having with calibration.
Pain – switched from roadbike seat to adamo – much worse. Lots of adjustments and tweaking but caused long-term issues after my ride last Saturday (like I could not sit on my seat on Sunday). Have the Cobb on now. Chose the saddle that is supposed to be best for my anatomy. Adjusted based upon web-site directions. For my short test, feels good. Will try it for RR2. If it has issues, will go back to the roadbike seat. At least I know its issues well and can deal with lots of lube.
Plan to ride for 6.5 hrs (not counting stops) and will keep track of total time. Conditions should be similar to AZ so I should get an idea of timing and how the day will go…then off for 1 hr run.
