cooler than expected at IMFL

I'm bringing arm warmers and cheap throw away gloves for the bike ride at IMFL this weekend, but with the expected temps I'm thinking I may get a little cold with just a singlet on. Any suggestions for how to stay a little warmer...especially the first half of the ride...without having to last minute buy some vest or expensive piece of cycling gear?

  • Go by the Post Office and get one of the large 'tyvek' Priority Mail envelopes (roughly 9x13 or so). Cut off the sticker flap, and then you have a perfect windbreaker/insulation layer that you can shove under your singlet in T1. When it warms up enough that you don't need it anymore, just dump it at the next aid station.
  • Weather.com says that Friday night will be 46 F and Saturday a high of 62 F. The sand is cold waiting around so some socks will help or at least flip flops or both. The Temps will be perfect for the run so focus on your plan and mile 18, then race to the finish. I will be there cheering you on and taking as many pictures as I can. Be sure to ID yourself with Team EN Gear. See you at the team dinner tomorrow. Rock it! Rocket!
  • Thanks guys!! See you tomorrow Jim.
  • Steve, I used newspaper under my singlet for the first half of the bike and it worked just great! Sounds like a perfect day to me:-) Best of luck!
  • Good ole newspaper....thanks Carolimage
  • Following along on the IMFL thread.... Just looked up the weather... Saturday forecast for low of 45 high of 60 and 21mph winds with 10-20mph overnight friday to saturday am.... For the bike I would be planning toe covers for shoes , arm warmers , gloves , and a vest or bike shirt ! In the hopes that was enough for the lower temps while wet, and thinking that 60 degree high is still low enough I could handle the additional clothes for the duration of the ride. Only getting rid of them in T2. With N-NW winds bike will definitely have some hard sections. Swim could be rough with winds although I think a north wind will make for calmer seas than you may think but I could be wrong on that. Run will be fast and comfortable.... Anyone who will be running after dark , Make sure to put warm clothes in your Run SN as it will be very cold after the sunset with a low of 40 predicted sat night to sun am. Be prepared and good skill to all!
  • Great advice from Tim here. Remember also that your spectator friends and family will be FROZEN especially after 5pm. They will need to bundle up!
  • Ditto what Tim stated! Did my first in 2010 at IMFL and was not prepared for cold! I think I shivered aways lots of run energy in the first 2 hours of the bike. Good luck and stay warm!
  • Thanks Tim and coach P!! Ironically my 2nd RR a couple weeks ago was in nearly the SAME weather....except got about 30' of freezing drizzle also. Little did I know it was preparing me for race day...minus the rain I hope??
