Memorial Day Weekend- Madison Training Camp!

Hi Folks,

For those that plan far in advanced - planning on making a "camp" week over Memorial Day Weekend in Madison, WI. My plan is to ride the Madison course Friday, another long ride (maybe two loops, no stick?) Saturday, and then do the Madison Half Marathon that happens to be that Sunday. Lines up real well for my CdA training, but thought others might be interested in some early season training up in Madison. I'd love to have some company!!

  • Rachel...I'll keep it in mind.  Several of us (Matt Aaronson, Ian Kurth, me) from IL, Wis area are racing the Long Course Worlds on June 29, 2015 and this could be good for a big training weekend.  The timing lines up nicely.
  • Sounds really cool although timing may be bad for me due to a trip to South Africa that week where I won't return until the Friday or Saturday. Since I'll be gone that whole week I expect hall passes to be tough to come by for that weekend...
  • No IM for me next year but would love to join everyone.
  • Awesome idea! I would love to join in on this. My first IM will be Wisconsin and I want to get as much exposure to the course as I can before the race.
  • I might be up for some of it - like Mary, no IM next year - focusing on short course/HIM get faster stuff. Like the idea of the 1/2 Mary.
  • Just wanted to bump this, as I need to dream of warmer times to come, and I know many of us need to schedule our lives very far out.

    My plan:

    Thursday night: arrive

Friday: ride whole IMWI course + brick run

Saturday: ride part-whole IMWI course + brick run

Sunday: Madison Half Marathon (http://www.madisonmarathon.org/spring/races/halfmarathonrun.html) or just run long. Go home.
I realize many people won't be that far in IM training at that point, but can still enjoy a weekend of some solid rides of part of the course if not up for the whole thing yet.

Accommodations: http://www.clarionhotel.com/hotel-madison-wisconsin-WI103 Hotel is right on the bike course, so very convenient. I'd be happy to share a room with someone.

If you are interested, please reply. There is a discount for prepaying for hotel rooms. I'd also be up to the possibility of taking advantage of Monday being a holiday and doing long rides Saturday and Sunday with run on Monday if more interest in it that way.
  • I am interested! I will be in week 17 of HIM plan at this point so I will join in for some parts, but probably not all....this is probably a question for my micro thread at some point.

I may or may not be staying in the hotel - I have family in the area and may end up staying with them.

@Rachel, if I do end up staying in the hotel I would be up for splitting a room (I'll try to figure this out in the next week or so) and/or carpooling if you want, since it looks like we're both coming from Chicago!

  • Awesome! The course works really well for doing partial distances of. You can do the loop once or twice for 40 or 80 miles, or if you do the stick from the hotel to the loop once, that gets you 65ish. It'll be a fun and hard weekend!

Keep me posted on hotel, that would be great. I would be up for carpooling as well.
  • I signed up for the half marathon on Sunday.
  • Sue, do you have any insight into the half? Would you say it is worth it, or just run on my own?
  • Rachel,
This is a great idea! Let me see if I can make this work.
  • @Rachel - ya know, it's just a 1/2 ... But, it's my carrot to ensure that I get moving on my running.
  • @Rachel - sorry I did a really bad job of getting back to you about the hotel room!
I am definitely in for this weekend but I am going to stay with family while I am up there. I am in for either Fri-Sun or Sat-Mon workout days. Still undecided about whether or not to register for the 1/2 - price increase tomorrow for anyone else in that boat.
Excited to meet some of you! This is coming up quick!
  • Alrighty folks, Memorial Day will be here before you know it! I have a friend who just moved up to Madison so I now have a place to stay. My plan:

Drive up Thursday after work, getting in around 9pm.
Friday: full race rehearsal (whole bike course + 1 hr run)
    Saturday: 2 loops (80 miles) + 1 hr run
Sunday: Madison Half Marathon. Drive home.

While we most likely won't all stay together riding, nice to know that others are out there and regroup at the end or along the way. Please let me know who wants in for all or part of the pain!
  • No takers? Lindsay, are you still coming and do you know your plans yet? Mary and Sue, want to join? Anyone? Bueller?
  • Here!

Yes, I am still coming up! I don't know that much of our weekend will overlap...but I am in for at least starting with you on Saturday!

    Here's my plan:
Friday: Drive up after work, probably get in around 8:30 or 9

Saturday: 1x loop....a part of me really wants to do 2x, but my longest ride this year has been 50 miles so I don't know if that's smart/I'm scared (thoughts?...I mean I have to do it eventually...)
    twilight 10k at night

Sunday: Stick + 1x loop (p.s. not very familiar with it, is the stick ride-able any time? or is it more of a headache than it's worth?)
    Drive home

If nothing else it would be fantastic to meet up someplace on the bike or even after for a meal!
  • Awesome Lindsay! We can plan to start together on Saturday at least. My advice on distance would be to do your longer ride on Saturday, and slightly shorter on Sunday, so if not going to do 2 loops, do the loop + stick on Sat, and 2x loop on Sunday. The loop is doable any time but probably not worth going all the way to Monona Terrace, as that is just a lot of admin crap there. Whalen is where the course really starts. As for if you are ready for 2 loops, I'd say depends. The course is really tough when you do it the first time, especially coming from riding in Chicago (don't want to scare you, just prepare you. I felt really defeated the first time I rode it). I think you COULD do it, but it might take a bit out of you for a few days, so depends on how important it is in your plan to be back at it on Monday. Maybe reach out to Coach P and ask him?

Logistically, from the facebook group, it looks like people have been parking and starting at Rocket Bikes. I am targeting an 8am start time both days if that would work with you. My cell is 703-217-4845. How about dinner on Sat night and/or lunch on Sunday?
  • Thanks so much for the input!

Okay - loop + Stick and 10k on Saturday, 1 loop on Sunday. I have all summer to tackle the double loop and don't want hinder my training next week.

I am good to start at 8am from Rocket Bikes on Saturday and either dinner Sat or lunch Sunday sounds great. I'll shoot you a text so we can keep in touch in case anything changes.

Looking forward to a fun training weekend!!
