The 2015 Texas Camp is Open!
Team -
Coach P is firing up his 2015 training camps…and Texas is one of them!
>> Complete TX camp details are here.
The camp — our fourth camp in TX — is March 19th to the 22nd, in the Woodlands TX. During this three day block, I will be on a mission to get you as fit and educated as possible.
Attending an EN Race Specific Camp is one of the most critical things you can do leading up to you next race. This is generally how the camp works:
We will meet on Thursday night in the Host Hotel for a welcome reception and review of the weekend. This is a great chance to meet your teammates and get last minute questions answered.
Friday and Saturday morning we leave from the hotel in wave starts designed to keep you in close proximity to other campers and maximize your ride time on the course. Each ride has an optional brick run window afterwards.
Friday and Saturday we have pre-Dinner lectures to help you develop a mastery of the course as well as refine your overall Race Execution strategy.
Saturday night is also the Closing Dinner when we commiserate over shatter quads and carb it up for the Sunday run.
Sunday is the long run on the course, once again a great learning opportunity for you.
We ride on the actual race course — this means you’ll see course markings, landmarks and experience every inch of the terrain you will face on race day. You’ll learn where things get hard, how to handle terrain and variable conditions and much more.
By the end of the camp you’ll have logged 224 miles on the bike and 20 miles on the run. Your brain will literally ache from all the learning you’ve done and your face will hurt from laughing so hard. Good times guaranteed.
Quick Details:
Registration includes everything but mercy. Technically, your registration fee covers the Camp, Schwag, Lodging all all meals except your Thursday and Friday dinner. All you need to do is GET THERE.
You should bring your tri bike, running shoes and all your racing gear. We’ll put in a lot of time on the road and you’ll want to be able to test your equipment, fitness, nutrition plan and much more.

Just putting in a plug for this dealio. I did it last year. WELL worth the time and money. Weather usually cooperative. This course definitely benefits knowing where to do this and that and where some extra focus is needed. I'm not racing IMTX this year, so I'm out. But, it's a great investment if you can swing it. Coach P literally got on the front and showed us how to ride this course (ok...he actually showed the fast folks....but you get the point....I was a mile or 2 or 3 or 5 behind!). Do it if you can! JL
Sooooooo, if you are interested, please speak up -- or sign up -- ASAP!
Thanks!
P
Just signed up Patrick... see you in March...
I know this may seem obvious to most, but considering the longest ride I have ever covered is 65 mile in a basement and a 56 in a HIM, at that point in March is it realistic to be ready for this camp? For strategy / execution / overall planning absolutely no brainer in committing.
Eric....I'm not coach P, so take this with a grain of salt, but....
I did IMTX last year, which was my first full IM. I did the IMTX camp too, and feel it was invaluable. I too had concerns about doing a 112 mile ride, when my longest rides in the training I had been doing at the time was only 4 hours a couple of times. I asked coach P about this ahead of time (wondering if I needed to hack the plan to do a longer ride or two (5hrs or so) prior to camp. He told me "I'd be fine....6hours is not a whole lot different than 4. OK? I trusted him and it turned out fine. I actually did 112 back to back and ran 7-8mile brick after both rides (I had to leave early and thus missed the sunday long run).
Last year the IMTX camp was a little earlier than this year (I think), and so I think that's why I hadn't done a ride longer than 4hours.
So, my advice would be that as long as you've done at least 4 hours a week or two prior to camp, you should be ok. The point of this little exercise is to add a bunch of volume at once, and then recover, to boost your chronic training load. This would be a bad strategy with running, due to risk of overuse injuries. But with cycling, this is much less likely (your neck and undercarriage may hate you, but no long term injury likely).
Just my $0.02.
@Eric -- totally doable. Worst case scenario we edit your day two ride, but as you noted, the upside if learning and experience are also significantly important!! Let me know if you have any questions!
Starting with.. Her.. "So let me get this straight.. You're going to go to camp? and it costs $900? "
Like most of the people around here... I have a wonderfully supportive wife that deals pretty well with my obsession (which will soon turn into hers as well... as she works toward Boulder 15'... 2 days before our 25th wedding anniversary!)... butttttt Patrick... just saying... the pressure is on you... I'll do the work.... but my gains better be massive or I'll be hearing about this for a long while!
Thank you so much for your insights. I am heading south in March because of your response.
The Best
Eric Miller

Thanks Ed for the information. Saw your ride on Strava today from Kansas City, impressive. Keep it up.
@eric... Was amazed to be able to get outside for one day... let alone three! It was a nice little volume boost... hopefully it doesn't ruin my testing next week.

Thanks
I couldn't make the camp a few weeks ago so I'm taking a few days off this week and driving over from MS to train. Plan to arrive Wed afternoon -- maybe get in short run. 112/6 on Thurs, Another 112 on Friday. I think there may be a group in the area supporting a ride on Friday. Run 2 loops of the run course Saturday morning before heading home. Would love some company for any of it.
