Jellyfish

I don't have much experience with ocean swims (live in MI) or jellyfish (apart from SpongeBob). There were not an issue in March in Cabo - having been diving in the warm waters of Cozumel, I expect to see more during IMCoz.

What's the advice on dealing with them? Ignore them? Protective lotion? Go faster?

Lots of conflicting advice in web space...

  • They are hardly noticeable. I think I was stung a couple of times in a training swim, and during the actual swim in 2012, and again in the actual swim in 2013. These "stings" are really nothing more than minor annoyances. Not worth even thinking about. Sort of like someone saying you might be bitten by mosquito during the run.
  • Thanks Paul - I appreciate the feedback!
  • My Coz experience with jellies is in scuba, but I agree with Paul. I've probably been stung 20+ times there. Rarely is it enough of a sensation to make me even reach for the area. Usually I'm photographing, and I barely notice it enough to look away from my target. All in all, I wouldn't do anything special and wouldn't worry too much.

Now, we'll see how I feel next year at 70.3 Coz...
