Alison Miller's Micro Thread

Hi, Coach Patrick,

Happy to be here!!!  Quick question.  Last year as I trained for IM, I focused quite a bit on keeping my cadence at 90 or above - even on the trainer.  Last night, though, I was noticing that it was difficult for me to keep my cadence at 90 and maintain my heart rate where it was supposed to be.  If I slowed my cadence a bit, I was better able to manage my heart rate.  So my question is: when on the trainer during OS, is it okay for my cadence to slow a bit in order to train at the proper HR???  I certainly have a good handle on keeping cadence where it should be when on the road.  Hope this makes sense.

  • Yes that's totally fine. There's always a discrepancy between the open road and the trainer, and that's probably exacerbated a bit by an aggressive start to your season. I expect that should net out and about four to five weeks.
  • Coach Patrick - I posted this in the Boomer section and it was suggested that I run this past you.  Please let me know what you think:

Frequently I just hang out on my bike while reading or watching a movie. Not a workout - this is post workout during the evening. For example - right now I'm watching a movie - spinning 10 mph just to burn a few calories - maybe an hour or so. Is there any reason i should not do this during OS? I know once I'm training for IM I should not do this. Any thoughts or experience on just hanging around on your bike?? As a boomer, keeping my metabolism going is good.

  • Alison, I think that's ok. Different, but ok. image
